New Comic Wednesday Review: QUANTUM AND WOODY #2

QUANTUM & WOODY #2 (Valiant Entertainment, January 31, 2018 release date) Writer: Daniel Kibblesmith.  Art & Colors: Kano.  Letters: Dave Sharpe.

There were enough things to like about QUANTUM & WOODY #1 to bring me back for another round.  This time the focus is on the differences between step-brothers Eric & Woody Henderson, and it’s a good read.  This issue doesn’t try so hard to be funny on every page and it works better.  The humor is not so on-the-nose, and it’s more entertaining as a result.

Also, it’s the character interaction, the situations, conflicts, and the impending resolutions that keep me interested in the book.  Kibblesmith is developing a good storyline, and Kano’s art is very appealing and engaging.

At the end of Issue #1, they dissolved the team and separated over their differences.  Well, as much separated as two people can be who have to “klang” their quantum bands together once every twenty-four hours or cease to exist.  Eric took a job as security guard at the secretive government Wherehouse for confiscated high-tech weapons. (A good job for a man who can create force fields at will).  Woody was swayed by Negative One, a comely female clone to work for her secret employer in exchange for being free of the quantum bands forever.  (A good job for a man who shoots energy blasts).

Issue #2 begins with a flashback revealing that the more serious Eric was the geek in the family who immersed himself in role-playing games while Woody, often the reluctant participant, would rather watch cartoons.

In the present, Woody is upset with Eric, who knew that Woody’s real dad was alive and withheld that information. They have a confrontation about it. Eric explains that Woody’s father was a wanted man and had to go into hiding. Woody doesn’t accept that reason and believes that Eric was so lonely he didn’t want to break up the family they shared with Derek Henderson as father.

Woody’s new employers enlist him to smuggle some hardware from the Warehouse as well as kidnap Eric so they can travel to Australia in search of Woody’s father.

There’s more panel time this issue with The Hedge, an interesting new character that is an animated garden hedge that takes a huge man-shape.

Oddly enough, the mustache that Eric (Quantum) sprouted in Issue #1 seems to have disappeared.  Did Kano just forget about the change and fail to draw it?  A mystery develops.

 RATING SYSTEM

STORY:  A fun read.  Not hah hah funny, just entertaining.  I’d rather have it this way.  2 POINTS.

ART:  The art really comes to life when Kano inks and colors his own pencils.  Dynamic.  2.5 POINTS

COVER: Fun, especially the pre-order variant. 1 POINT.

READ AGAIN? Yes.  You miss some of the dialogue and reveals without a second go-through.  1 POINT.

RECOMMEND?  I’m enjoying this, but not ready to give it a full recommendation just yet. If you like previous Quantum & Woody titles, you probably will like this.  0.5 POINTS.

TOTAL RATING: 7 POINTS. On the border, and moving towards a higher score.

New titles for horror comics fans coming in April

EDITOR’S NOTE: As a fan of horror comics, I offer these two new titles for those looking for something new and scary to read. You’ll probably need to pre-order these books. I don’t expect to see them getting any shelf space in comic shops (but I’m not blaming them, it’s just comic shop economics).  Both these titles look promising, and El Torres has written some excellent stories that I’ve read. Go to http://www.amigocomics.com   for more details and information . . . . . .

HIDDEN BLOOD

Phil is a Nazi hunter. Clarice is a professional MMA fighter and nightclub dancer. The creator of Sydney Hammer, Massacre, brings us another over-the-top, white-knuckle, grindhouse tale!

From the master of Horror El Torres and art by Jaime Martínez! Self-exiled priest John Brennan, a troubled exorcist, is summoned to Rome to stop an ancient evil spreading within the Holy See itself. A revolutionary story about possessions and exorcisms, with ties to the church’s shady past, and a man, almost helpless and alone before the evil that would bring the end of the Catholic church.

This volume collects the acclaimed four-issue horror miniseries ROMAN RITUAL, published by AMIGO COMICS (yes, by us).

“Roman Ritual has an excellent pacing that uncomfortably keeps you mesmerized and eagerly turning the page. ”
–Mike Peluso, ComicMonsters

“El Torres is perhaps the most underrated horror comic writer working today. He comes at every subject he takes on with an edge that’s sharp and deadly that you never quite see coming. Roman Ritual is no exception.”

New Comic Wednesday Review: NINJA-K #3

NINJA-K #3 (Valiant Entertainment, January 24 release date)

Writer: Christos Gage.  Art:  Tomas Giorello with Roberto de la Torre.  Colors:  Diego Rodriguez.  Backup Story Art:  Ariel Olivetti.  Letters:  A Larger World Studios.

The action and intrigue keep the story moving as new writer Christos Gage continues with the first story arc of NINJA-K.

At the end of the last issue, Ninja-K (Colin King) meets Ninja-C, who has been targeting past MI6 ninja agents and claims responsibility for their murders.  They fight, but the older Ninja-C (trained in the 1940’s for WWII service) holds up well against the younger King, even with the advances in weapon technology he employs against C.

As they battle, their back-and-forth banter reveals that C bears a grudge against the MI6 ninja program and its agents and is on a personal vendetta.  Realizing they are evenly matched and beginning to sympathize with C’s situation, King offers a truce.  It gives him an opportunity to hear more of C’s back story and learns of the Acclimation Bureau. When comparing it to his experience King realizes he’s been just as manipulated, controlled and deceived during his career. The issue ends with a shocked and discouraged King.

“Endings & Beginnings: Part 2”, the back up story, continues the adventure of Ninja-A on a WWI mission to stop a German planeload of deadly chemicals.  There’s an awesome battle atop a bi-plane in furious flight that is depicted in wonderful fashion.

        RATING SYSTEM

STORY:  Gage keeps building the mystery and suspense, leading up to what should be a big confrontation in future issues. I’m excited to see where he takes this.  His characters are realistic and well-defined. 2.5 POINTS

ART: The action and battle sequences are amazing, and Giorello keeps the necessary pages of extrapolation interesting through use of clever panel shapes, placements, and overlaps. Olivetti maintains the quality in the backup feature.  2.5 POINTS

COVER: Always interesting and eye-catching. 1.5 POINTS.

READ AGAIN? Yes, it’s a good arc. Can’t wait to read it again in one sitting once it finishes.  1 POINT.

RECOMMEND? Yes. At other companies this would be my favorite of their titles. However, Valiant puts out enough great books that it makes it hard to decide — so I’m backing off from naming it my fave Valiant title.  1 POINT.

TOTAL RATING:  8.5 POINTS. Way above average, trending towards perfect.

YOE BOOKS will release LIMBO LOUNGE in February

The Award-Winning IDW Publishing Imprint
Will Release Limbo Lounge This February

San Diego, CA (January 24, 2018) — Yoe Books, in conjunction with IDW Publishing and Top Shelf, is overjoyed to announce a worthy title to its celebrated catalogue—LIMBO LOUNGE by acclaimed illustrator Dave Calver.

Spearheaded by multiple Eisner Award-winner, Craig Yoe, who guarantees this title will live up to their collections of stupendous comic art geniuses of the past, Limbo Lounge is already getting recognition across the comic book community, racking up positive review attention.

DoomRocket opines, “Limbo Lounge mixes equal parts Tex Avery and Hieronymus Bosch. Vibrant, expressionistic madness.”

An original graphic novel where newly dead people in Limbo await their fate at a bar while surrounded by bored interlopers from hell. This trippy, surreal, full-color adventure brings us from the hot, swirling sands of hell to the colorfully bizarre Limbo Lounge. Meet flower-headed freaks, Bud and Lou. Root for their new friend, a spry, elderly nun, Sister Eunice, as she works remotely in Limbo continuing to rid earth of despicable dirt bags. And, by all means, avoid the knife-wielding little pageant-princess-gone-bad as she plots for anything she can get at anyone’s expense.

“It’s a thrill to make such an auspicious Yoe Books debut with the mind-blowing Dave Calver,” said Yoe. “Our motto when we started was 'Making Comics History'. That was carefully worded because we have always planned on publishing, in addition to classic cool comics, original graphic novels that would ’make history’!”

“Craig has been an invaluable partner over the years and we’re always excited to see what he produces next,” said IDW Publisher and President, Greg Goldstein. “Spotlighting some of the most eye-popping comic book artists is what Craig does best, and Limbo Lounge is no exception.”

Reserve your copy of Limbo Lounge from Yoe Books today before it hits bookshelves 2/6/18!

New Comic Wednesday Review: SINK #4 takes us back to school

SINK #4 of 5  (Comix Tribe, January 24, 2018 release date) “Young Team”.  Story by John Lees. Art by Alex Cormack. Colours by Alex Cormack & Lisa Moore. Letters by Shawn Lee.  Logo by Tim Daniel.

Welcome back, horror comic aficionados, to Sinkhill.

What have we learned after three issues about the coarse and sordid fictional borough of Glasgow, Scotland?  1) Don’t wander strange streets in the hours between late night and early morning, 2) There may yet be some life in the afterlife, and 3) You can’t take the city out of its’ residents, even if they move away and start over.

What must it be like to grow up in a place like Sinkhill?  Do the youth become acclimatized to the callousness and savagery that surrounds them?  Do they turn numb to the ruthlessness?  Are they  desensitized and indifferent to Sinkhill; or must they conform or die?

Sink #4 allows us a peek at a quartet of young students in a formative moment, one that will shape and mold their values as well as influence their behavior. The Fantastic Four were physically altered and came together as the result of an accident in space.  The Young Team were transformed by what happened in the alleys, abandoned lots, and vacant warehouses of Sinkhill. They are a product of the streets, not outer space.

The story begins in the classroom and ends in the classroom. As page one opens, a teacher speaks to a roomful of students following a disturbing incident.  We don’t see a full profile of the teacher, which makes us as apathetic towards his character as the appearances of some of the bored and distracted students facing him would seem to indicate. When we do get a partial glimpse of his ruddy face, his weathered appearance reveals he’s been in a few scraps himself. Maybe those light facial scars were inflicted by some in the class.

One of their fellow students has gone missing over the weekend. Cut to a telling image of an empty desk and chair.  The teacher speaks of community and empathy, and does his best to curb the class gossip regarding abduction by a blue van full of maniac clowns. (See SINK #1 for their first appearance.) He’s ineffective.

After school, four classmates gather in the courtyard to swap stories of other kidnappings and mysterious van appearances while discussing what to do. Their leader, Hardeep, decides they will hunt the clowns down and kill them before any more youngsters go missing. He’s joined in the search by Jake, Craig and Sarah.

Hardeep works hard to assert himself and act like the strongest of the set. Jake exhibits introvert tendencies due to apathetic parents, and seeks acceptance.  Craig is plagued by imaginary killer clowns that interrupt his sleep each night, and is hesitant to join the search and confront his greatest fear.  Sarah just wants to be treated as an equal, and has to prove she has more “baws” than the boys.

Their search leads to an abandoned factory, where they meet the next teacher - - Mr. Dig.  The fox-masked vigilante (also from Issue #1) is busy interrogating a bound gang member while brandishing his weapon of choice, a sturdy metal shovel.  Mr. Dig’s teaching style differs from the classroom, through physical/punishing example.   He’s upfront and in-your-face, preferring to instruct through visceral visuals.

You’ll want to read the rest of the story without any further prompts from me.  It usually ends bloody in Sinkhill. There’s even a twist ending to finish with a Twilight Zone aftertaste.

***

SINK #4 shows up on shelves tomorrow, as long as your local comics shop ordered some copies. Expect a sell-out and get there early. Smart readers pre-ordered their copy.

However, if you can’t do either of those things you have one more option this time.  Comix Tribe on Thursday, one day after release, will be offering copies of SINK #4 for sale on their website.  Don’t hesitate here either, as they will only have a limited number of copies available.   Go to:  http://www.comixtribe.com

  RATING SYSTEM

STORY:  Mr. Dig does try to convey the right and proper message, but this is Sinkhill where things often take a different turn. 3 POINTS.

ART: Great images throughout. Telling facial expressions. Graphic violence, all splashed with lots of red. 3 POINTS.

COVER:  Simple and attention getting. 2 POINTS.

READ AGAIN?   I want to. You will too. 1 POINT.

RECOMMEND? Yes. The whole series deserves more attention. 1 POINT.
