PREVIEW: C.H.U.D. LIVES! and emerges from the '80s tomorrow

Tomorrow marks the release date of the C.H.U.D. LIVES! anthology of fiction based on the classic 1984 cult film. I’ve been looking forward to this new book, as I have fond memories of the cheesy but fun film that featured great performances by John Heard, Daniel Stern, John Goodman and others.

C.H.U.D. was made on a budget of $1.25 million and ended up with a worldwide box office gross of $4.7 million. C.H.U.D. detailed the pseudo-serious adventures of a New York City policeman and the manager of a shelter for homeless people who join forces to investigate the increasing disappearance of his residents. They soon learn of a race of humanoid monsters living below the city and emerging from manhole covers to capture and dine on homeless people and other unlucky passersby.

C.H.U.D. was an acronym for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers, a band of misshapen deformed creatures of uncanny strength.  As the story uncovers a subplot involving hidden radioactive waste transforming subway-dwelling vagrants into monsters and a government campaign to cover up and suppress any further spread, C.H.U.D. was also used to refer to Contamination Hazard Urban Disposal.

The C.H.U.D. LIVES! book contains stories that occur before, during or after the events portrayed in the film.

To help build interest for the new anthology, Crystal Lake Publishing made available a free eBook that included an interview with the late Andrew Bonime, who directed the film as well as secondary actor Jerry Castaldo.  Also included in the eBook is an excerpt from one of the C.H.U.D. LIVES! stories, They Are C.H.U.D. by Alex Laybourne.

You can grab it from Amazon in Kindle format here = https://www.amazon.com/Behind-Scenes-tribute-anthology-Crystal-ebook/dp/B07BMBLX4N/ref=sr_1_2?tag=geolinker-20&s=digital-text, or from this page, which links to Kobo, Apple, Barnes & Noble, etc. = https://www.books2read.com/u/mvjDJe

The eBook provides a good no-risk opportunity to sample the contents of the anthology and decide whether to explore further.  The digital book will be offered at a reasonable price ($3.99) for it’s introduction beginning tomorrow, April 27.

Director Bonime attributes the popularity of the film to its’ “anti-establishment stance” and “a tongue in cheek approach.”

Laybourne’s story builds both suspense and dread quickly in a blunt, straight-forward narrative.  An investigative team, wearing hazmat suits and carrying shotguns and flamethrowers, enters a subway tunnel where humanoids have been spotted.  A sudden explosion buries their exit and glowing eyes appear in the resulting darkness as the warning noise of the Geiger counters increases in volume.

Have I convinced you yet?  Here’s the link to order the book . . . . .  https://www.amazon.com/C-H-U-D-LIVES-Anthology-Jonathan-Maberry-ebook/dp/B07BK7LBQZ/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1524788620&sr=1-1&keywords=c.h.u.d.+lives

“Who knew that Behaving MADly might garner my co-author, Ger Apeldoorn, and myself the tremendous honor to receive an Eisner nomination,” says Yoe! Books Editor Craig Yoe. “Behaving MADly has been one of our most popular books. Now, we have our fingers, toes, eyes, and ears crossed that the voting fans, like the esteemed Eisner judges, behave madly, too!”

Justin Eisinger, Senior Editor for IDW, reflects on the reality-based works, Calamity Jane and Lennon, saying, “These nominations are a testament to the real-life characters that inhabit these tales, as well as the creative forces that put their stories down on paper. Thanks to their efforts, we can all have a further understanding and appreciation of a hard-charging female American legend like the incomparable Calamity Jane, or crawl inside the mind of John Lennon to inhabit pop music’s most influential personality. Both tales work so perfectly in graphic novel form. I am thrilled that the teams behind these books have earned additional recognition for their contribution to our medium."

“Diverse storytelling is at the heart of IDW, a founding principle expanded continuously through our many imprints,” says Greg Goldstein, President and Publisher of IDW Publishing. “We’re proud of all the writers, artists, and editors who invested so much of themselves into this year’s nominated projects, the talented people who pour pure passion into their work.”

New Comic Wednesday Review: JEEPERS CREEPERS #1

JEEPERS CREEPERS #1 (Dynamite Entertainment, April 25 release date) Rated Teen+.  Written by Marc Andreyko.  Art by Kewber Baal. Colors by Jorge Sutil.  Letters by Taylor Esposito.

This is a neat little scary story that atmospherically sets the stage in Issue #1 for what should prove to be some horrific scenes to come in future issues.  The monster resembles the leading threat from the Jeepers Creepers movies, so I’m assuming that’s what this new story is based on - - a huge winged beastie with a nasty appetite for carnage.

The first seven pages are dialogue and caption-free, which helps establish the spooky mood and allows the art to utilize shadows and silhouettes with perfect color choices from the support team.  Full moon shedding light on a swampy/marshy area while a flock of crows land on a large overhanging tree.  The last panel on page one shows an even larger and different shaded silhouette looming over the crows.  It lands/crashes, demolishing the tree in a burst of splinters and feathers.

A big demon in a long fur coat emerges, wanders through the swamp and breaks into a dilapidated barn.  When we next see this creature, it’s behind the wheel of a large panel truck flying down a back country road.

The color schemes change for the scenes of an American grad student who arrives in Mexico City to complete his thesis on dragon gods of Aztec mythology.  We can only assume that he’s going to meet the creature.  This becomes more apparent when he obtains an ancient sacrificial knife, which acts like a magnet to garner the monster’s attention.

       RATING SYSTEM

STORY: Not a lot going on, as this issue works hard at establishing the background for the story to come. A little history lesson on Aztec sacrificial rites is included, as a way of foreshadowing what may happen later in the story. 2 POINTS

ART: A really fine job by the art team here.  Worth the price of admission.  2.5 POINTS

COVER: Looks enough like the movie monster to get the attention of fans of that film.  1 POINT

READ AGAIN? Not essential, but it gives you another opportunity to admire the art.  ONE-HALF POINT.

RECOMMEND? Not for the story, which so far appears to be formulaic. I’d like to be proven wrong, maybe future issues will have more to offer.  Still, worth a look for the art.  ONE-HALF POINT.

TOTAL RATING: 6.5 POINTS.  This is the range where I leave it up to the reader to decide. Horror fans may appreciate this more.

Hurry up and get PINPRICKS so the stings can begin

PINPRICKS  (Bughouse Comics, release date to be announced) http://www.bughousecomics.com ISBN # 978-0-988-9884479-2-9.  130 pages. Created by Jason Pell.  Edited by John Macleod.  Written and illustrated by Jason Pell.  Funded through Kickstarter at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1265535519/pinpricks-a-book-of-tiny-and-terrible-oddities?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=pinpricks

I was fortunate enough to persuade the author to let me examine a digital review copy of this book. It’s delightful, sardonic darkly humorous, very creative and imaginative. Jason Pell’s artwork reminds me of a cross between Charles Adams and Jeff Lemire.

The Kickstarter campaign for the successfully funded (224% of goal, $10,400+) Pinpricks book will end Wednesday, April 25 at 7 p.m.  You can still participate and get a digital or hardcover copy of the book, and I recommend all fans of horror comics do so.  I’m backer #282, and can’t wait to page through the hardcover and share it with friends.  Go to the link here to check it out  = https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1265535519/pinpricks-a-book-of-tiny-and-terrible-oddities?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=pinpricks

Within the last decade flash fiction, those stories of extreme brevity, have become very popular.  I guess it was only a matter of time before this style transitioned into comics.  Horror comics are the prefect genre for this format, as aptly demonstrated here.

PINPRICKS is described as “101 illustrated short stories of misfits, monsters and the terminally awkward”, a short summary that is concise and to the point.  Many stories are just one page, one panel of art including beginning, middle and end. Some stories are told completely in a single image without benefit of text. There are several two page stories, with one panel of art supported by one page of text.

The longest story at 4 pages appears near the end of the book.

A good example of the magic behind Pinpricks is the very first story — a horrifying image of a boy with a look of both wonder and fear on hi sface as he watches his fingers catch fire. The text above the art tells us that “each cell in his body was a living thing, Christopher Clark learned in science class today”.  The text below the image ends the story: “How alive? He wondered. But only briefly.”

What a punch in the face!  There are many stories like that throughout the book.  If PINPRICKS was intended to be longer, many of these stories could be expanded to 8 or 10 pages.  But Pell just puts the idea out there, wraps it up, and moves onto the next story.

This is a book that can be read in one sitting, or absorbed over time.  I think it’s more effective when consumed over several readings. One could really stretch it out by reading just one story a day. That might offer the most impact, certainly the most bang for the buck.

Among the gems that await readers are tales of angry television sets, hungry moons, secretive family trees, a house that grows, a haunted schools, a wishing well that serves as a portal to an alternate reality, an umbrella that blocks out the darkness, demanding trash collectors, and telemarketers of doom.

Don’t hesitate. Click the link and check it out.
