Review: ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA: FEAR HIM

ALL NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA FEAR HIM Review

ALL-NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA: FEAR HIM (Marvel Comics, June 2015) Dennis Hopeless with Rick Remender, writers. Szymon Kudranski, art.  Trade paperback, 136 pages. Reprints Captain America: Fear Him #1-4, Captain America #280, Avengers #64.  ISBN # 0785 192581 / 9780785192589

Summary from the Goodreads website . . . . .

A hungry villain has returned to feed on the city's fear! It's up to the All-New Captain America and Nomad to curb the Scarecrow's appetite...a task that might be easier if the dysfunctional duo weren't always at each other's throats!

While the Scarecrow and his army of terror crows do their worst, Cap and Nomad find themselves separated, one step behind the villain's fearsome plans. But when the Scarecrow's terror pheromone takes Captain America's mind, it's Nomad's last stand!

What does it take to scare a man who grew up in a dimension of boogeymen? And can he bring Cap back to his senses before his mind is lost to fear forever? Plus: classic tales of terror starring the Scarecrow and Sam Wilson!

My review on the Goodreads website . . . . .

This was a fun read, but far from essential in the overall Captain America canon. A good bargain bin read if you can find a copy. I picked mine up on a closeout sale at Books-A-Million.

I was reminded throughout of the similarities to a Batman book.

Sam Wilson/former Falcon/now Captain America (Batman/Bruce Wayne) has taken over the shield and puts a new spin on Captain America, now a hero with wings and the ability to communicate with birds (but not bats). He patrols the city with computer/technical assistance from the former Captain America (Steve Rogers), who's aged since the super-serum that kept him youthful has worn off, and gives him fatherly advice (like Alfred). Falcon is partnered with the adopted son of Cap, Nomad, in what is best described as a dysfunctional/argumentative relationship (Robin/Damien). The villain is Scarecrow . . . What? That's a Batman villain! I realize there is no copyright on the name of Scarecrow, but a villain that uses a fear pheromone to disorient opponents feels a lot like the DC Scarecrow. I wonder which version came first? The Marvel version has a pesky cadre of crows under his command to help out with the fighting.

The story is what you might expect: Captain America is under the influence of the fear pheromone and has to be rescued by his partner, with the aid of some NYC sewer-dwelling homeless kids. They sure dress well, look well-fed, and super-smart for homeless kids. Ah, well - it’s just a comic book.

The story by Dennis Hopeless has some fun interplay between new Cap, old Cap, and Nomad. The villain is kind of one-dimensional. The art by Szymon Kudranski is effective but not flashy. I wish the story didn't include so many large textural sound effects that hide some of the art. I found myself enjoying the story in spite of it all.

Two back-up stories feature reprints of classic Scarecrow appearances. The Captain America story from 1968 has a plot element involving a nationalist political group with hidden motives (America As It Once Was, America As It Could Be Again) trying to capitalize on a phony association with Captain America. It brought back unpleasant memories of POTUS giving a phony hug to the American flag. The Scarecrow is working to expose them, so I'm kind of on his side in this one -- except his methods are cruel. The story suffers from an excess of dialogue and is a little too much on the preachy side.

The Falcon's first encounter with The Scarecrow in 1998 is a much better read, and a stand-alone tale during Geoff Johns' brief run as an Avengers writer. It may be the best Avengers story he has written in what turned out to be a pretty unremarkable run on the title.

BCC Hosts BEATTY, JANSON, PALMER, WORKMAN, ZECK

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - August 28, 2019 - Celebrate comics at the 20th annual Baltimore Comic-Con on October 18-20, 2019 at the Inner Harbor's Baltimore Convention Center. The Baltimore Comic-Con takes great pride in presenting some of Marvel Comics' most venerable creators: John Beatty, Klaus Janson, Tom Palmer, John Workman, and Mike Zeck. Tickets can be purchased online now to avoid lines at the show!
John Beatty
John Beatty got his first break working for Marvel and DC Comics when he was 19. The year was 1980 and the decade that followed is now referred to as the "Bronze Age" of comic books! Beginning with short filler stories for DC Comics anthology books, Beatty soon found himself as the finisher on the JLA working over George Perez. However, the run was limited to 4 issues due to Marvel Comics offering him the inking duty over his favorite character, Captain America, with his long-time mentor and collaborator, Mike Zeck. Coming off of a 2.5 year run on Cap, Zeck and Beatty were tagged to do the art on the first major clash of heroes and villains, Marvel Super Heroes: Secret Wars!
Secret Wars
which saw the change of Spider-Man's costume to black in issue #8 of the series, something that turned into a bigger deal as Venom. After Secret Wars, the team of Zeck and Beatty produced the hit limited mini-series and a graphic novel starring Marvel's newest "A-List" character, The Punisher. The last major work the team produced was Captain America Annual 8. Covers for Captain AmericaG.I. Joe, and many other titles were a staple of work for the team during the '80s. Beatty continued projects for Marvel, including Thanos QuestSquadron SurpremeVenom: The Madness, and others. At DC Comics, John was the inker for Batman: Year 3 and the first 5 issues on the new Batman title, Legends of the Dark Knight. Eight years of work on various Batmantitles with writer Doug Moench and penciler Kelley Jones became well-known in the '90s, including the last 2 installments on the Vampire/Batman GN series, other Batman graphic novels, and a 3-year run on the monthly Batman title, recently reprinted in two beautiful hardcover editions. Eventually turning his sights on DC Licensing, Beatty has produced vector ink and color for style guides, from movies to animated series to products such as toys, cards, packaging, and clothing, among other things. This is uncredited work, but is still being used. Traditional inking is still Beatty's main love, and he continues to practice it and teach those around him who want to learn.
Klaus Janson
Klaus Janson's storied career begins back in the 1970s, when he got his first professional comics credit on Marvel's Jungle Action, and he's built a long line of comics work ever since, with noteworthy penciling or inking runs on titles such as Marvel's Defenders and Daredevil, and DC's Detective Comics and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Future_s End by Klaus Janson
His artistic skills see him regularly as a penciller, inker, and colorist, and he regularly teaches courses, both publicly at venues such as the School of Visual Arts, and privately at comics publishing events and conventions. You can find examples of his recent work on DC Comics' SupermanConvergence: Batman and Robin, and New Challengers, and Marvel's Amazing Spider-Man.
Tom Palmer
Tom Palmer is best known for his significant contributions as an inker to many noteworthy titles and runs. He worked over some of the largest artists in the industry on Marvel's The AvengersX-MenDoctor StrangeDaredevilTomb of Dracula, and X-Men: The Hidden Years
Avengers by Tom Palmer
His approach to inking changed the way the industry approached the task, working in a style closer to a painter than how the typical inker completed their jobs at the time. He is highly regarded by the artists whose pencils he inked, including luminaries such as Neal Adams, Gene Colan, John Buscema, and John Byrne.
John Workman
John Workman managed to turn a love for the comics form into a career. During the past five decades, he has held the position of editor, writer, art director, penciler, inker, colorist, letterer, production director, and book designer for various companies.
Thor by John Workman
He created (with some help from Bhob Stewart and Bob Smith) the offbeat stories in Wild Things (with much of that material having first appeared in Star*Reach and Heavy Metal) and both wrote and drew the comics series SindyFallen Angels, and Roma. In 1991, he reflected on model Bettie Page in Betty Being Bad (Eros), and later produced the hardbounds Heavy Metal: 25 Years of Classic Covers and Innocent Images: The Sexy Fantasy Females of Viper and Kiss, as well as The Adventures of Roma, a reformatted graphic novel version of his earlier series. He continues to write and draw and to do a whole lot of lettering for a number of comics companies on an international level.
Mike Zeck
Mike Zeck began his storied career in comics with Charlton Comics with their animation-related line of titles before moving to Marvel Comics to leave an indelible mark.
Mike Zeck_s Classic Marvel Stories
Zeck provided art to unforgettable characters and titles such as 1987's "Kraven's Last Hunt" in the Spider-Man titles, "Circle of Blood" in The Punisher, and the classic Secret Wars featuring Zeck's design on the classic black costume for Spider-Man (and later adopted by Venom). Zeck's work has graced the pages and covers of AquamanBatman: Legends of the Dark KnightGreen LanternG.I. JoeG.I. Joe: Special MissionsLoboDeathstroke The TerminatorThe Eliminator, and too many titles to mention here. His creator-owned project Damned, appeared from BOOM! Studios.
"The influence generated by these 5 guys alone is moving," said Marc Nathan, show promoter for the Baltimore Comic-Con. "Each one of these artists have made significant contributions to Marvel Comics in particular, as well as comics in general, and the stories you love to read simply wouldn't be the same without them. We're fortunate to have them with us this year, and the fans will undoubtedly agree!"

Indie Comics Preview: GEEK-GIRL Mini-Series Gets Collected

INFORMATION PROVIDED COURTESY OF B.A.D.’S COMIC BOOK P.R. (NETHERLANDS) . . . . ...

The first arc of Geek-Girl’s acclaimed series gets collected, and a Crime War ignites!

For Immediate Release
28 Aug 2019

Created and written by Sam Johnson (The AlmightiesCabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman) and illustrated by Carlos Granda (CharmedGrimm Fairy Tales), the original Geek-Girl Mini-Series introduced the world to attractive, popular Maine college co-ed Ruby Kaye – a girl used to getting whatever she wants...

On a drunken whim, Ruby landed a pair of power-inducing super-tech glasses from her college's resident brainiac; but rather than impressing her friends, Ruby alienated the majority of her clique while klutzily trying to demonstrate her new-found abilities – accidentally knocking drinks over their expensive designer dresses. Her BFF Summer James was into what Ruby could do now, though – and pushed her into trying to be a super-hero (jokily giving her the moniker ‘Geek-Girl,’ following her klutzy actions) – which climaxed with Ruby stopping super-villain Lightning Storm from taking over their city of Maine but, electrocuted by Lightning Storm in the process, getting left in a coma!

Johnson brings us up to speed for the new Geek-Girl: Crime War TPB – collecting the first four issues of Geek-Girl’s new, ongoing series: “Summer's feeling a bit responsible for what happened to Ruby, and has got the super-tech glasses and is trying to fill in for her as 'Geek-Girl'. Jock super-hero Pit Bull has taken her under his wing with the intention of training her up to go solo – but Summer is having a hard time of it.” Johnson continues, “Lightning Storm did a lot of damage to law enforcement in Maine, which is now badly undermanned, and there's a crime wave going on.”

And things are about to escalate into a crime war, as a new bunch of villains have entered the scene, looking to make a name for themselves and clean up. Johnson continues, “The League of Larcenists are a quirky bunch of villains lead by Pig Head – a guy whose brain has been fused with a pig's (with a face to match). The crew are packing serious tech, including blasters and a teleporter, and are pulling bank jobs, with the intention of gaining a reputation and growing in number.

“Meanwhile, Ruby's previously-estranged clique are looking to ingratiate themselves back in with Ruby, now that she's popular again after saving their city – and they perceive Summer as trying to ride on Ruby's coat-tails now she's doing the 'Geek-Girl thing.' As a result, they've now put her out in the cold – and when Ruby comes out of her coma, she and her BFF Summer’s reunion doesn’t exactly go how Summer would have expected...
Written by Johnson, illustrated by Carlos Granda and colored by Chunlin Zhao, Geek-Girl: Crime War TPB is Out Now and available at Amazon and https://samjohnsoncomics.wixsite.com/geekgirlcomics
