Book Review: FASCISM by Madeleine K. Albright

FASCISM: A WARNING by Madeleine K. Albright  (Harper, April 10, 2018)  Hardcover.  304 pages.   ISBN 0062902232 / 9780062802231

Summary from the Goodreads website . . . . .

A personal and urgent examination of Fascism in the twentieth century and how its legacy shapes today’s world, written by one of America’s most admired public servants, the first woman to serve as U.S. Secretary of State.

A Fascist, observes Madeleine Albright, “is someone who claims to speak for a whole nation or group, is utterly unconcerned with the rights of others, and is willing to use violence and whatever other means are necessary to achieve the goals he or she might have.”

The twentieth century was defined by the clash between democracy and Fascism, a struggle that created uncertainty about the survival of human freedom and left millions dead. Given the horrors of that experience, one might expect the world to reject the spiritual successors to Hitler and Mussolini should they arise in our era. In Fascism: A Warning, Madeleine Albright draws on her experiences as a child in war-torn Europe and her distinguished career as a diplomat to question that assumption.

Fascism, as she shows, not only endured through the twentieth century but now presents a more virulent threat to peace and justice than at any time since the end of World War II.  The momentum toward democracy that swept the world when the Berlin Wall fell has gone into reverse.  The United States, which historically championed the free world, is led by a president who exacerbates division and heaps scorn on democratic institutions.  In many countries, economic, technological, and cultural factors are weakening the political center and empowering the extremes of right and left.  Contemporary leaders such as Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un are employing many of the tactics used by Fascists in the 1920s and 30s.

Fascism: A Warning is a book for our times that is relevant to all times.  Written  by someone who has not only studied history but helped to shape it, this call to arms teaches us the lessons we must understand and the questions we must answer if we are to save ourselves from repeating the tragic errors of the past.

my review on the Goodreads website . . . . .

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright does a commendable job of summarizing the history of Fascism in the 20th Century - - more importantly how it began, how it grew, and the hazards to democracy world wide. She then details multiple examples of governments across the world that have descended into fascism or exhibit the tendencies, including the current United States.

After reading of the tendencies and tactics of Mussolini, Hitler and others it's bothersome to me to realize how our current President is employing many of the same tactics to demoralize our democratic government. I confess that I do not completely understand what his end game is, and it frightens me. I often suspect that he is a foreign agent, serving not the United States but his own interests and the various countries that he has business dealings with.

Interspersed with examples from her own life and careful analysis based on her own experiences as a representative of the United States, this is an important book that should serve as both a warning and a wake-up call to worldwide readers. It's disturbing and alarming, but leaves a message of hope and optimism.

from the ComiXology press release . . . . . . .

ComiXology Originals Debuts Elephantmen 2261: Holiday Special

On December 12, 2018, ComiXology Originals releases Elephantmen 2261: Holiday Special, the first ever Elephantmen holiday issue by the long time creative team of writer/letterer Richard Starkings, artist/colorist Axel Medellin, a stunning cover by Boo Cook, and a holiday backup story by Richard Starkings and Superfreaks artist Margaux Saltel.

Hip Flask’s fellow Information Agent, Vanity Case, lost her father when she was just a child… and Hip’s friends Savannah, Hunter and Jet lost their grandfather just over a year ago. In Elephantmen 2261: Holiday Special, Hip decides it is his job to cheer them up for the holidays…

This stand-alone one-shot also includes a special holiday short story outside of the Elephantmen universe written by Richard Starkings with art by Margaux Saltel (Superfreaks) titled, MARZIPAN! about a little alien who meets a little girl. Girl falls in love with little alien. Alien falls in love with Marzipan. Little girl loses little alien!

Not familiar with Elephantmen? Elephantmen are human/animal hybrids designed to fight a war. But the war is over, and now they live among us. Debuting nearly 15 years and 80 issues ago from Image Comics, comiXology recently released the 5-issue who dunnit miniseries Elephantmen 2261: The Death of Shorty as part of the comiXology Originals line of exclusive digital content. Both Elephantmen 2261: The Death of Shorty #1-5 and Elephantmen 2261: Holiday Special are included in Prime Reading, Kindle Unlimited and comiXology Unlimited at no additional cost and available for purchase only on comiXology and Kindle.

About the Creators
Richard Starkings is also the creator/writer of Ask for Mercy; and co-creator of The Beef with Tyler Shainline and Shaky Kane. In the course of a distinguished career in comic books, Richard edited for Marvel UK in the 80s and founded the lettering studio Comicraft in the 90s. He has worked as a lettering artist on just about every comic book you might care to mention, including Batman: The Killing Joke, and has written for The Real Ghostbusters, Zoids, Transformers and Doctor Who.

Axel Medellin has been creating art for the Elephantmen series since 2010 and is probably meeting a deadline right now. Nevertheless, he has somehow managed to fit in drawing and coloring other comics for HEAVY METAL, Zenescope, BOOM! Studios and Image Comics’ Fifty Girls Fifty with Frank Cho.

Boo Cook studied at art college in Cambridge. In the year 2000 AD he approached the British comics weekly 2000 AD and was soon drawing Judge Dredd, Judge Anderson, ABC Warriors, Harry Kipling, Asylum and Blunt for the Judge Dredd Megazine. Boo has illustrated for Titans’ Doctor Who and created covers for Marvel including Wolverine. Boo is a talented musician and performs with his bands, Forktail and Motherbox.

Margaux Saltel graduated with a degree in Fine Arts in 2011. She has established herself as a kidlit and comic book artist since 2014, mainly in Europe. More recently, she started collaborating with American publishers on comic book covers (Z2 Comics’ Welcome to Showside, The Sweetness, BOOM! Studios and IDW.)

Fiction: A CHRISTMAS COLLUSION, Part 2 of 4

Editors Note:  This is the rest of the beginning of a short story I read aloud at Noir At A Bar (Timothy’s, West Chester PA) on November 14.  As each writer was limited to seven minutes stage time, I only read the first two sections of this story. I’m gong to finish it and post the whole thing here, in four separate parts.  Please return to this site on December 12 to read Part 3.  (The first image is from the 1932 film ‘Santa’s Workshop’, film cel courtesy of Wikipedia. Other images also obtained via Wikipedia.)

November 30, 2018

Attention: The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Houston Chronicle, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times and The Waynesburg Democrat-Messenger

You did not publish my last warning, perhaps because I tried to disguise my true identity.

I used a source I hoped you would respect and give more credibility to than my real self - - - an Elf.

Hopefully, this new alert from an anonymous insider (me) will get your attention.

Since my last correspondence, the situation has gotten worse.

I’ve got to proceed with caution because I’m in danger of being found out.

I need to carry on at my workstation and keep making crayons as if nothing has changed.

Color me Cagey Yellow.

This is the second attempt to persuade you to publish my letter of warning.

Why don’t you take this seriously? Color me Raging Red.

The meaning of Christmas is facing its greatest challenge ever.

We all  assume that Santa’s Christmas Eve mission is a harmless legend.

The intent is to encourage good behavior among children.

Instead, it is a diabolical scheme to subvert youthful thinking.

I’m not referring to the excessive marketing.

That forces parents to empty their bank accounts in service to their offspring’s wish for the latest and greatest toy or possession.

This is much worse.  It’s nothing more than the end of the world as we know it.

Santa Claus is a fascist.

I would know. I work for him.

But like-minded elves have vowed to bring down his agenda from within and thwart his wretched inclinations.

Color me Gross Out Green.

To be clear, ours is not a popular resistance.

Too many elves take a “don’t upset the sleigh bells” stance and do nothing.

We want Christmas to continue to be that part of the holiday season that celebrates the giving of gifts to children.

We believe our first duty is to the holiday.

But Santa continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the spirit of Christmas.

He is no longer moored to any discernible first principles to guide his decision making.

Ever since the 2016 election he feels empowered to follow his baser instincts.

His Russian and American partners are corrupting democracy. Next victim - - Christmas.

It may be cold comfort, but the world should know that there are adults in the room.

We fully recognize what is happening. And we are trying to do what’s right even when Santa Claus won’t.

Ours is not the work of the deep state. It’s the steady elfy state.

We are secretly trying to unravel the threads of division that Santa is attempting to sew across the nation.

Color us Passionate Purple.

Specifically, we are working to tamper with the underlying sleeper cell mechanisms implanted in the two most popular toys this season.

You can thank mass media promotion and social media propaganda for that.

This Christmas, what boy doesn’t want to own a J.K.A.K.47? Or 'Little J.K.  as they are most commonly referred to.

The Johnny Kalashnikov Automatic Rifle, endorsed by both the President and the NRA.

Nano-needles have been threaded through the stock and along the trigger.

As soon as a child holds the toy, the subliminal implant is placed under the skin.

The unconscious command will be activated when a youngster hears any one of three key words: liberal, progressive, or Democrat.

Then the zombified boy flips the hidden switch on the underside of the magazine.

The Little J.K. converts from rubber bullets to live rounds. Color me Defecation Brown.

An even deadlier threat to our societal norms lies within the best selling doll for young girls this season — Little Orphan Anastasia.

This one received the Grim Housecreeping Squeal of Approval. L.O.A. uses the same nanotechnology.

The microscopic needles inside the doll, and the Faberge egg accessory, inject pheromones directly into the bloodstream.

Young girls are then compelled to cook and clean house.

As soon as they hear any of the three key words - - feminist, girl power, or Oprah - - they instinctively reach for pots or push brooms.

Color me Grieving Gray.

A dedicated group of elves are working diligently through the night, while Santa sleeps.

We are filing and blunting the tips of the nano-needles so they won’t function properly.

But, who knows how many other toys besides these have been tampered with?

Play it safe and stay away from ALL toys. Don’t sleep this Christmas Eve.

After Santa visits your home and departs, destroy all presents immediately.

New Children's Book Details First Cross-States Motorcycle Ride

STRANGE FRUIT CREATOR JOEL CHRISTIAN GILL ANNOUNCES NEXT BOOK WITH LION FORGE

“Fast Enough: Bessie Stringfield’s First Ride” Childrens Picture Book To Debut in February 2019

ST. LOUIS—Lion Forge is proud to announce the publication of the next book by Joel Christian Gill (Strange Fruit), released in time for Black History Month 2019!

Fast Enough: Bessie Stringfield’s First Ride is a fun imagined account of a young Bessie Stringfield, a true adventurer and one of the first African-American women to travel solo across the United States on a motorcycle.

“Fast Enough is for anyone who has ever been told that they are not enough. You are enough just as you are and Bessie's story proves that,” says Joel Christian Gill.

Have you ever been told that you’re not enough? That you’re not strong enough, tall enough, or fast enough? Bessie was told she was not enough.

“I’ve been following Joel’s career with great interest since he published this first Strange Fruit volume with Fulcrum,” says Lion Forge Editor-in-Chief Andrea Colvin. “His #28daysarenotenough campaign is just the kind of movement Lion Forge is happy to support. Fast Enough, which introduces a black female motorcyclist—and the concept of forming your own ideas of what you can or can’t do--to children is the first of what we hope are many Joel Christian Gill books to come from Lion Forge.”

Fast Enough combines an imagined story of Bessie Stringfield as a young girl with historical facts about the real Bessie, and an essential read for parents and children alike! This must-read picture book arrives in stores in February of 2019, and deserves a place on bookshelves in libraries, living rooms, and classrooms everywhere.

Valiant Adds GREGG KATZMAN As Marketing Coordinator

from the official Valiant Entertainment press release

New York, NY (November 27, 2018) - Valiant Entertainment is excited to announce that comics journalist and marketing professional Gregg Katzman has been named to the position of Marketing Coordinator. In his new role on the Valiant Marketing team, Katzman will focus on growing awareness of the Valiant brand through engagement with comics press, retailers, and Valiant fans, plus will work on forging strategic relationships with key partners in the entertainment space.

“I’m very happy to welcome Gregg to the team,” said Director of Marketing Mel Caylo. “He brings a great passion for Valiant’s characters and stories, and the experience he has working in the comics industry gives him an insightful perspective that will be very useful in his position.”

Katzman has almost a decade of experience in the press and retail side of the comic book industry. He's created entertaining and informative content for Comic Book Resources, IGN Entertainment, Comic Vine, and more, which included a plethora of editorials, reviews, and interviews about Valiant Comics. He also spent two years as Midtown Comics' Marketing & Events Manager, focusing heavily on fan engagement and passionately generating exciting opportunities for fans, including a multitude of signings with comic creators – such as a Batman Day event that featured Frank Miller, Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo, and Tom King – and collaborated with TV networks, film studios, and PR firms to offer fans the chance to see comic book movies before they opened in theaters and even attend premieres. Katzman has a BA in Communications from the University of Hartford.

"I'm beyond excited to join the Valiant team," said Katzman. "The 2012 relaunch immediately won me over and since then, I've been doing my best to motivate people to check out Valiant. Their focus on quality over quantity speaks for itself and there really is something for everyone to enjoy. The Valiant Universe is such an awesome place that's overflowing with potential, and after hearing about the team's upcoming plans (I can't spoil anything or else they'll send Ninjak after me), it's only going to get better."

Springsteen On Broadway On Netflix

For those Springsteen fans who live too far away from New York City, or lack the means to plunk down their hard-earned money for tickets to SPRINGSTEEN ON BROADWAY - you can experience the magic of that show thanks to Netflix (provided you're a subscriber to the streaming service, of course).
Here's a video of the trailer for the upcoming December 16th Netflix special, courtesy of the fine folks at Paste Magazine.
Also look for the soundtrack album to be released on December 14.

Here's a link to the trailer video . . . . .

One of the most memorable concerts I've attended was the Storyteller sessions that Ray Davies took on tour some years back. There is so much to learn about a songwriter's inspiration and creativity, as well as pivotal moments in their lives -- that makes the future listening of their music that much more delightful and special.
I'm not the world's biggest Springsteen fan, but I certainly respect what he's done for music - - and I sure love a lot of his songs.
When you're on the Paste link, check out the archived video for "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" - - a real classic that illustrates perfectly the Springsteen magic. Enjoy!

Review = The Recalled Crime Comic: DEAD RABBIT

DEAD RABBIT REVIEW

EDITOR’S NOTE: Part of my personal mission for the Pop Culture Podium blog is to try and draw attention to deserving works, generally from smaller publishers,  that don’t have the benefit of huge marketing campaigns or just get lost in the monthly glut of titles.  I was suitably impressed after reading Issue #1 of DEAD RABBIT and considered it for a review.  I decided to wait until after reading Issue #2 to see if the story held up or would succumb to the usual crime comics tropes.  It’s a good story, and deserving of a larger audience - - although that’s now up in the air after the recent news.

There’s a New York City bar using the Dead Rabbit name that also is in possession of a registered trademark for use in comics and publicity.  They also published a graphic novel based on historical data related to early Irish criminal gangs in NYC. So the bar sued both Image Comics and the Forbidden Planet chain of comic stores in NYC for trademark infringement and also selling the DEAD RABBIT comic.  Since then, Image has recalled both Issues #1 and 2, and they’ve also been pulled from Diamond Distribution as well as all references to them.

Customers who bought the issues became aware of the increased value and put them up for sale.  Naturally, some comic shops didn’t return the books, held onto them, and they showed up on eBay and other sites for rapidly rising prices, as much as $60 for Issue #1.  The Comics Price Guide website currently has Issue #1 valued at $25 for a Near Mint copy, with Issue #2 still at the $4 cover price value. We’ll see if that changes.

The books get a RECOMMENDED rating from me.  Perhaps Image will republish the series and continue it under a different name.  It doesn’t appear to be that difficult, and the story wouldn’t suffer because of the change.  Here’s hoping that occurs.  Stay tuned.  In the meantime, here’s a review of what most of us missed out on . . . . . . .

DEAD RABBIT #1  (Image Comics, October 2018 release date) Writer: Gerry Duggan.  Artist:  John McCrea.  Colorist: Mike Spicer.  Letterer: Joe Sabino

I love a good crime comic.  This one wasn’t pre-ordered or even on my radar. It was an impulse buy pulled off the comic shop shelves (Captain Blue Hen, in this case), flipped through, and purchased.  Here’s evidence of another good reason to visit a bricks-and-mortar actual shop to get your comics - - making discoveries.

The art team got my attention immediately: great facial expressions throughout, well done fight scenes, emotional moments, and creative coloring. The scattering of panels against a solid black background really makes them come to life. Shading the flashback scenes in just two tones is effective.

As the opening splash panel reveals, there’s nothing rabbit-like about the main character except for the name - - except for the clever cover title logo. The criminal’s outfit is a business suit, duckbill pub cap, and hooded black mask with red X-slits where the eyes should be.

Dead Rabbit was a “equal-opportunity offender, stealing from banks and drug-dealing criminals” in Boston during the ’90’s as a  tv news program recalls his infamy until his disappearance in 1997.  One crimelord, victimized by Dead Rabbit of a cool $12 million, still seeks retribution.

Why should readers root for a criminal, even if he is a loner? Because there’s plenty here to create empathy for Martin (a.k.a. Dead Rabbit).  He’s a good guy, taking care of his crippled wife and trying to stretch the old stash of money to pay for the growing medical bills.

He takes a job at a big-box hardware/lumber store to try and identify some rich customers he can later rob. Instead, he spots a thug buying materials to dispose of a body, tracks the murderer to his hideout, and ends up publicly reviving Dead Rabbit. Now there are nasty people looking for him.

DEAD RABBIT #2  (Image Comics, November 2018 release date)  Same creative team as Issue #1.

Martin Dobb’s wife Megan has a seizure and is rushed to the hospital. The text-free page where Martin dejectedly returns to the parking garage after receiving the bill for medical services is priceless — sheer agony on Martin’s face as he glances at the outrageous invoice.

Martin needs a big job to finance the hospital stay, and seeks out his former driver, Wheels. Except Wheels isn’t so reliable anymore. There’s a nasty accident that is beautifully choreographed across several pages.

Martin gets away, but has to get Wheels to a hospital, where he is later visited by some very inquisitive criminals.

I’d really like to find out where this is going.  The groundwork has been laid for a great crime story.  We can only hope that we’ll be seeing the continuation of this, under a new name.

INKWELL AWARDS Moves To Philadelphia In 2019

Inkwell Awards Changing Host Show Location from HeroesCon to the Great Philadelphia Comic Con!

New Bedford, MA/USA— November 20, 2018

From the official B.A.D. Comics Publicity Press Release . . . .

The Inkwell Awards is announcing that their annual live awards ceremony will be relocating to the Great Philadelphia Comic Con! at the The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA, during April 12-14, 2019. Their awards ceremonies for the previous eight years, including 2018, were held at the June HeroesCon in Charlotte, NC.According to Inkwell Awards founder and director Bob Almond, it was HeroesCon promoter Shelton Drum who initially invited the non-profit organization to his long-running, family-friendly show in 2011. “We had been left hanging in the wind by a major convention, and Shelton, who had endured similar problems, wanted to support a kindred spirit and show that this altruistic, annual event could be done and well-supported.”

Almond added, “Changing venues is both sorrowful and exciting. Our presence at Heroes’ industry-respected and community-loved show further boosted our credibility and exposure, which helped with fundraising in the long run. We can truly thank HeroesCon for where we are now. But the 16-hour drives and related travel expenses each season would leave our budget almost wiped out.”

Regarding the location switch, Almond explained, “When Great Philadelphia Con!’s Creator Relations and Artist Alley Director Stan Konopka with promoter Christopher D. Wertz offered us their venue and funding support for all expenses, we were thrilled. A mere six-hour drive is a huge relief for us. Christopher’s convention has grown in a short time in reputation and attendance from both the celebrity/artist guests and the fans.”

Wertz gave the following statement:

“We at The Great Philadelphia Comic Con! would like to graciously thank the Inkwell Awards and Bob for honoring our show by choosing us to host the Inkwell Award Ceremony and its nominees at our April 2019 event and beyond. Stan has been working with Bob closely in order to create one of the best Awards Ceremonies in the business. We look forward to working together to make an amazing and enduring event that can grow with our show year over year.”

In a statement, Heroes promoter Drum said:

”It’s been eight years since Bob Almond made HeroesCon the home of The Inkwells. We have been privileged to be host to Bob and his team as they honored the true unsung heroes of comics, the Inkers. The annual Inkwell Awards ceremony– the anchor of our opening day programming– has spotlighted and awarded many of the greatest inkers in comic’s history.

“And now Bob is heading to Great Philadelphia Comic Con! and taking the Inkwells with him. They will be missed, but it is wonderful knowing Bob Almond will still be at it making the world a more appreciative place for our black-thumbed brethren. Godspeed, Bob.”

Almond concluded, “Shelton graciously took us in at a low-point for me. Now, as we celebrate The Inkwells’ 10th anniversary, it’s like progressing from one chapter of growth to a new one as we boldly embark on our second decade with Christopher and Stan.”

The Inkwell Awards is the only official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and educate regarding the art form of comic-book inking, as well as annually recognize the best ink artists and their work. Established in 2008, the Inkwells are overseen by a volunteer committee of industry professionals and assisted by various professional ambassadors and contributors. They sponsor the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Kubert School and host the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award.

Fiction: A CHRISTMAS COLLUSION by Michael J. Clarke (Part 1 of 4)

Editors Note:  This is the beginning of a short story I read aloud at Noir At A Bar (Timothys, West Chester PA) on November 14.  As each writer was limited to seven minutes stage time, I only read the first two sections of this story. Im gong to finish it and post the whole thing here, in four separate parts.  Please return to this site on November 30 to read Part 2.  (The image is the classic 1881 illustration of Santa Claus by Thomas Nast, courtesy of Wikipedia.)

November 23, 2018 Black Friday

An unpublished letter received by The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Houston Chronicle, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times and The Onion.  ( Editors Note: For full effect, read aloud in a voice/tone similar to Sean Connery and/or Christopher Steele.)

The name is Agent.  Secret Agent.

MI6 precisely, if you must know.  Please heed my warning.

The celebration of Christmas is now a global phenomenon.

In the United States alone, more than 94 million homes, or 79% of all households, will display a Christmas tree.

Santa Claus will make 640 millions stops around the word before Christmas Eve ends.

The timing couldn’t be better for the long-dormant plans of subversion to come to life.

This year, celebrate the righteous Christ rather than the commercial Christmas.

Do not display a tree.  Do not engage in gift-giving. Protect your children and yourself.

This message has been sent to major newspapers, television and radio news sources across the world.

Publish my letter as soon as possible and avoid being scooped on the story.

And save the world from a descent into unethical, unprincipled chaos.
