Fan and Pro Nomination Ballot Deadline Approaching

Fan and pro-jury voting will close on May 30, 2018. Nominations are tallied independently, and the combined nomination ballot is compiled by the Ringo Awards Committee. The top two fan choices become nominees, and the jury's selections fill the remaining three slots for five total nominees per category. Ties may result in more than five nominees in a single category. Nominees will be listed on the ballot alphabetically.

If you have not already submitted your ballot as a fan, please do so before the deadline.
Final Ballot Voting

After processing by the Ringo Awards Committee and Jury, the Final Ballot are targeted to be available to comic creative professionals for voting on June 25, 2018 and will be due by August 31, 2018 for final tallying. Presentation of the winners will occur at the Baltimore Comic-Con on the evening of Saturday, September 29, 2018.

Preview: X-O MANOWAR #19 coming in September

X-O MANOWAR #19 – Matt Kindt & Juan José Ryp Fight Eternity and Unleash "AGENT" This August!

Valiant Entertainment is proud to announce an explosive new story arc for the publisher’s critically acclaimed X-O MANOWAR series: “AGENT,” starting with X-O MANOWAR (2017) #19! Beginning on September 26th, Eisner-nominated writer Matt Kindt (ETERNITY) and incendiary artist Juan José Ryp (BRITANNIA) install Aric of Dacia as an operative of the Global Agency for Threat Excision to face off against a fantastic new world of gods, myths, and heroes!

Featuring the return of characters from ETERNITY, the seminal experiment in cosmic storytelling, X-O MANOWAR #19 will bring two of Valiant’s most beloved science fiction epics together for the ultimate meeting of space-faring warriors!

“After the events in ETERNITY, Divinity came back to Earth and everything reset to a degree,” said writer Matt Kindt. “Except Divinity brought some problems back with him...or, more accurately, some problems followed Divinity back home to Earth. We kind of teased this a little bit at the end of ETERNITY but how it manifests itself is going to be pretty nuts. We’re bringing the cosmic to Earth!”

Beyond time, space, and reality, there lies the Unknown…and now it’s coming here! When soldiers from a mysterious foreign realm arrive on Earth, it’s up to the armored Visigoth known as X-O Manowar – newly returned to the planet and now the leader of his own elite G.A.T.E. unit – to deal with the intrusion. But are these otherworldly emissaries truly the threat they appear to be, or does a larger danger loom over the Valiant Universe still?

On September 26th, worlds collide as New York Times best-selling writer Matt Kindt (DIVINITY, Grass Kings) and dazzling artist Juan José Ryp (NINJA-K) bring a new plane of existence crashing down upon our own in a brand-new jumping-on point for 2017’s best-selling series – featuring covers by Kenneth Rocafort (The Ultimates), Alan Quah (Orphan Black), Mico Suayan (BLOODSHOT SALVATION), and Renato Guedes (Wolverine)!

There's a New Geek in Town in Geek-Girl vol.2 #1!

Created and written by Sam Johnson (The AlmightiesCabra Cini: Voodoo Junkie Hitwoman) and illustrated by Carlos Granda (CharmedGrimm Fairy Tales), the first Geek-Girl Mini-Series introduced the world to attractive, popular Maine college co-ed Ruby Kaye – a girl used to getting whatever she wants...

On a drunken whim, Ruby landed a pair of power-inducing super-tech glasses from her college's resident brainiac; but rather than impressing her friends, Ruby alienated the majority of her clique while klutzily trying to demonstrate her new-found abilities – accidentally knocking drinks over their expensive designer dresses. Her BFF Summer James was into what Ruby could do now, though – and pushed her into trying to be a super-hero – which climaxed with Ruby stopping super-villain Lightning Storm from taking over their city of Maine but, electrocuted by Lightning Storm in the process, getting left in a coma!

Johnson brings us up to speed for the new series: “Summer's feeling a bit responsible for what happened to Ruby, and has got the super-tech glasses and is trying to fill in for her as 'Geek-Girl'. Jock super-hero Pit Bull has taken her under his wing with the intention of training her up to go solo – but Summer is having a hard time of it.” Johnson continues, “Lightning Storm did a lot of damage to law enforcement in Maine, which is now badly undermanned, and there's a crime wave going on.”

And things are about to escalate into a crime war, as a new bunch of villains have entered the scene, looking to make a name for themselves and clean up. Johnson continues, “The League of Larcenists are a quirky bunch of villains lead by Pig Head – a guy whose brain has been fused with a pig's. The crew are packing serious tech, including blasters and a teleporter, and are pulling bank jobs, with the intention of gaining a reputation and growing in number.

“Meanwhile, Ruby's previously-estranged clique are looking to ingratiate themselves back in with Ruby, now that she's popular again after saving their city – and they perceive Summer as trying to ride on Ruby's coat-tails now she's doing the 'Geek-Girl thing;' and as result, they've now put her out in the cold. As if that wasn't enough for the rookie super-heroine to do deal with [Johnson concludes]: enter super-villain The Cad – who has the power to mess with girls' heads!”

Written by Johnson, illustrated by Carlos Granda and colored by Chunlin Zhao, Geek-Girl #1 is out May 30 from Markosia, available at http://samjohnsoncomics.wixsite.com/geekgirlcomics/home-3 and at Comixology.

Praise for Geek-Girl:

"The new Geek-Girl series is off to the right start; the action, events, characterization, and all other elements about this comic book are balanced nicely, and I highly recommend reading this issue." -Jose J. Becerra, Anything Geek Culture.

“A great series to get into if you’re looking for something super-hero related but original and interesting in its own right.” -Jay Brown, Comic Sleuth.

"A charming comic, the dialogue displays a witty back and forth that would make Kevin Smith proud." -Kris Bather, Broken Frontier.

"This comic book is something special." -Donna-Lyn Washington, Review Fix.

"A brilliant premise, an interesting character, and intriguing prospects for the future."

-Chris Orr, Dress Like The Hulk.

Comixology to make public announcement June 1 regarding original content

EDITOR’S NOTE: I wonder what’s in store next?  So far, Comixology Originals has provided exclusive content from Marvel, Valiant, and Kodansha.  Perhaps more publishers are getting in on it.  I’m appreciative of what Comxiology has done for comics by opening up new markets, and bringing a new audience.  Recent reports that I’ve seen suggest that digital has not affected print sales all that much - - it’s just opened up the marketplace and both are doing well.  I’ve got a Comixology account but I rarely use it.  I guess I’m just from the older generation. We’re more tactile. Like to smell the books and hold them.

Tune in to Twitch on June 1st at 2pm PDT/5pm EDT for a major comiXology Originals announcement.

Viewing parties to be held simultaneously at all Amazon Pop-Up kiosks and Amazon Books retail locations with special giveaways.

On Friday, June 1st, tune in to Twitch.tv/Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/Twitch)  at 2pm PDT/5pm EDT for a major announcement from comiXology Originals via livestream. In addition, consumers across the U.S. are invited to attend viewing parties at their nearest Amazon Pop-Up (https://www.amazon.com/b?node=14303222011) or Amazon Books (https://www.amazon.com/b/ref=s9_acss_bw_cg_FYS_3a1_w?node=13270229011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-2&pf_rd_r=HPA160B6CAGXF9ABAP4E&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=4d065238-294c-49ef-a141-7c6c0c0b9964&pf_rd_i=17608448011) retail locations. VALIANT UNIVERSE: THE DECKBUILDING GAME
Added to Unrivaled Tournament Lineup

Players immerse themselves in the world of Valiant while competing for
cash prizes and more in the world’s largest tabletop tournament

from the official Valiant Entertainment press release . . . . .

New York, NY (May 29, 2018) – Valiant is proud to announce that VALIANT UNIVERSE: THE DECKBUILDING GAME, created in collaboration with Catalyst Game Labs, has been selected as a featured game for this year’s Unrivaled, the world’s largest tabletop game tournament!

VALIANT UNIVERSE: THE DECKBUILDING GAME joins 15 other tabletop games as part of 2018’s Unrivaled Tournament, including Kingdomino by Blue Orange Games, Onitama by Arcane Wonders, Evolution by North Star Games, and Exploding Kittens by The Oatmeal. VALIANT UNIVERSE: THE DECKBUILDING GAME is available to play now at satellite qualifiers and regional tournaments in participating local game stores and game conventions across North America all summer, culminating in a Grand Finale that will be broadcast live from Las Vegas this late Fall. After a successful inaugural year in 2017, this year’s Unrivaled prize pool is up to $300,000, with top players eligible to win $10,000 each!

“We are thrilled to partner with Catalyst Game Labs and to have VALIANT UNIVERSE: THE DECKBUILDING GAME as part of our slate for Unrivaled’s 2018 Tournament,” said Greg Davis, Chief Marketing Officer, Unrivaled. “The depth and complexity of the game adds a great element to the overall portfolio. We are sure that the strength of the Valiant brand and characters like Ninjak and Bloodshot will be a huge draw for our players.”

Taken from the pages of Valiant’s critically acclaimed line of comics, in VALIANT UNIVERSE: THE DECKBUILDING GAME, players go up against Project Rising Spirit to infiltrate and seize their massive, hidden research installation located under Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. Codenamed “the Facility,” the structure uses unknown energies to morph and transform itself at will to keep horrid villains, dangerous creatures, alien entities, and top-secret research projects trapped within. Rumors of the Facility’s existence and its most prized possessions have leaked, and the Valiant Universe’s most powerful organizations – The Harbinger Foundation, the Renegades, G.A.T.E., and more – are taking an interest. Players purchase cards to craft a unique deck, then battle their way through the ever-changing Facility grid that moves during play, maneuvering their superhero miniatures to battle it out with other heroes for ultimate control! Unrivaled Tournament regional events bring employees and customers from local game stores together at parties held at GameWorks or comparable venues around the country to compete for prizes and a chance to win a seat at the four-day Grand Finale in Las Vegas. The Unrivaled Road Crew also recently set off in May to tour the country, appearing at local stores and gaming conventions, such as Gen Con and Origins, and offering additional opportunities for players to secure an entry in the Finale. Awards will also be earned by the stores represented by the players, so they can join them at the Finale. All game stores registering to become a sanctioned Unrivaled venue for 2018 will be invited to the regional events, space permitting. The first Regional event was held in Salt Lake City, Utah at Oasis Games on May 19th. For a complete schedule and information on how to register as a player or sponsoring store, visit https://unrivaled.com

Valiant was recently acquired by DMG Entertainment, a Los Angeles-based leader in global entertainment with diverse holdings and operations. Valiant and DMG most recently announced a multi-picture deal to bring BLOODSHOT and HARBINGER to the big screen as feature films. Book Review: UNBURY CAROL by Josh Malerman

UNBURY CAROL by Josh Malerman  (Del Rey, April 2018) Hardcover, 367 pages.  ISBN #0399180168 / 9780399180163

from the Goodreads website summary . . . . .

Carol Evers is a woman with a dark secret. She has died many times . . . but her many deaths are not final: They are comas, a waking slumber indistinguishable from death, each lasting days.

Only two people know of Carol’s eerie condition. One is her husband, Dwight, who married Carol for her fortune, and—when she lapses into another coma—plots to seize it by proclaiming her dead and quickly burying her . . . alive. The other is her lost love, the infamous outlaw James Moxie. When word of Carol’s dreadful fate reaches him, Moxie rides the Trail again to save his beloved from an early, unnatural grave.

And all the while, awake and aware, Carol fights to free herself from the crippling darkness that binds her—summoning her own fierce will to survive. As the players in this drama of life and death fight to decide her fate, Carol must in the end battle to save herself.

My review on the Goodreads website . . . . .

With UNBURY CAROL, Josh Malerman steps outside the horror genre that first gave him notice (award winning THE BIRD BOX) and creates a dark fantasy in a weird west setting that is threaded throughout with elements of Edgar Allan Poe.

Some of the reviews I've read lament the fact that the novel is not horror and rate it as missing the mark, but perhaps they were misled in their expectations. Other reviews call the book a unique spin on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale, but there is less to connect it to that story than there is to the works of Poe, specifically THE PREMATURE BURIAL and THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER.

In fact, it's not inaccurate to summarize this book as an introduction of Poe themes to a fantasy setting.

The story is set within the borders of Harrows, The Trail and the towns that crop up along it, a small section of geography in an unspecified time and setting. Because of the use of horses for transportation, the frequent use of pistols, a town where law is enforced by a sheriff, and the mention of outlaws the reader makes an assumption that this is a western setting- - and of course a weird one. Magic of sorts is used and one villain in particular has a steampunk type of modus operandi.

Carol Evers suffers from a deep waking slumber that resembles death and lasts for days. Her husband, who will inherit a vast estate upon her death, is the only person in Harrows who knows of her condition. One who did know, a male friend, is now dead and the other is a former lover who left long ago rather than deal with her special situation. He's now a legendary outlaw named James Moxie.

Dwight, as you might imagine, is mean-spirited and schemes to have Carol declared dead and buried alive so that he can assume full control of the estate. Through a devious intermediary he dispatches several mercenaries to stop James Moxie, who has since learned of the plot and is rushing to get back to Harrows and rescue Carol.

Carol is by far the most interesting character in the novel. Malerman does a good job of letting the reader inside her head during her various spells and revealing her fears, concerns, determination and brave efforts to bring herself back to reality. During her coma, she dwells within a dark state where she experiences a sense of falling without a landing until she senses the increasing presence of others inhabiting the same space. The sections of the novel that feature Carol's point of view remind the most of what Poe did with his main characters in the above-mentioned two works.

James Moxie's legend is due to an incident where he won a gunfight without drawing his pistol. This is never fully explained (attributed to magic) except for a late scene involving strings. That doesn't work for me because of an earlier scene where Moxie escapes from a jail in an impromptu fashion and would never had time to thread strings throughout a sheriff's office. I prefer to leave it unexplained and chalk it up to magic. Moxie has conflicts of his own, especially as regards Carol, and his role as a responsible person.

Even more interesting is the villain Smoke, who lost both legs and now walks on hollow tin supports from the knees down. These legs are filled with oil, which he can release through a clever mechanism and create devastating fires.

The chapter entitled "The Clock On The Mantel" is a clever homage to Poe's 'The Telltale Heart'.

This is worth reading. Malerman has developed enough of The Trail that I wonder if he plans to return to this setting in some future stories. I'd welcome that.

Book Review: CHIEFS by Stuart Woods

CHIEFS by Stuart Woods.  (G.P. Putnam’s Sons) Paperback, 430 pages. Published July 2005. (First publication 1981).  ISBN 045121580X

from the Goodreads website summary . . . . .

Stuart Woods' Edgar Award-winning novel spans fifty years of racial tension, politics, and murder in the small Southern town of Delano, Georgia, where a depraved killer claims his innocent victims even as three very different generations of policemen seek to stop him.

For the people of Delano, Georgia, 1920 was a landmark year. That winter they elected their first police chief, built the first jail. . .and discovered the first body -- the naked, brutalized corpse of a young boy.

So began a forty-year manhunt that would embroil three generations of small-town police chiefs in the dark, twisted secrets of their sleepy, God-fearing community -- and expose a seamy underbelly of hatred, corruption, and perversion too terrible to imagine. . .and too virulent to ignore.

My review on the Goodreads website . . . . .

Reading CHIEFS marked my return to Stuart Woods' writing. I had read a Stone Barrington novel many years back, and while I liked it I wasn't impressed enough to search out more.

I was re-introduced to Woods by my brother-in-law, who is a fan of the Barrington novels, and lent me several books by Woods.

I picked up this one to read first and I'm very glad I did. It's a real winner, and even more notable in that it happens to be Woods' very first novel (1981) which he spent eight years in completing.

His hard work and research shows throughout CHIEFS.

It's historical fiction that covers events in a small town (Delano, GA) through it's formative years spanning the 1920s through the 1960s by following both politics and law enforcement.

The book is divided into three sections, each covering a specific chief of police and the challenges they encounter in performing their job (illegal liquor, racial profiling and the KKK, criminals, burglaries, etc). The one unifying thread is the evidence gathered by the first chief identifying a potential serial killer of young runaway boys that remains unresolved. The second chief picks up the thread and nothing definitive occurs until the third chief solves the crime in the final pages of the novel.

Like most epic historical novels, there are plenty of characters all fully realized by Woods with many of them overlapping into all three sections of the novel. A great read.
