Jazz Great CHARLIE "BIRD" PARKER Gets Graphic Novel Biography

LEGENDS UNITE: KAREEM-ABDUL JABBAR TO PEN THE INTRODUCTION TO Z2 COMICS’ UPCOMING GRAPHIC NOVEL PAYING TRIBUTE TO CHARLIE “BIRD” PARKER

Company Announces Introduction for “Chasin’ the Bird:
Charlie Parker in California” Released in Celebration of Bird 100

NEW YORK, NY—In honor of the 100th anniversary of Charlie “Bird” Parker’s birth, the life of the jazz icon will be told in the pages of an upcoming graphic novel to be released by Z2 Comics in late September, now with an introduction by basketball and cultural icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

During his short life, Bird changed the course of music. He was a pioneering composer and improviser who ushered in a new era of jazz and influenced subsequent generations of musicians, writers and artists. Music industry legend Quincy Jones once said, “I believe that a hundred years from now, when people look back at the 20th century, they will view Bird, Miles and Dizzy as our Mozart, Bach, Chopin and Tchaikovsky.”

Similarly, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s time in the NBA will remain one of the most celebrated eras in the history of the sport itself. Jabbar, a 6x world champion, holds the record as the NBA’s All-Time Leading Scorer, boasting 38,387 points in his twenty-year career. Since retiring in 1989, he has gone on to become a celebrated New York Times-best-selling author, filmmaker, ambassador of education, columnist and cultural commentator. As a social justice activist, Kareem was awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian honor by former President Barack Obama. As a student and Jazz historian, Kareem’s voice is the perfect introduction to the world of Charlie Parker in California.

Chasin’ the Bird, a phenomenal graphic novel…becomes an archeological dig into the legend that was Bird—and the man that was Charlie Parker” says Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. “What is especially impressive is how Dave Chisholm and Peter Markowski capture in words and art, the spirit of Bird’s music, rooted in the traditions of classic music but reshaped into his own—and their own—personal expression. It is the universal quest each person embarks on to find their unique voice.”

This groundbreaking graphic novel tells the story of Bird’s time in L.A. starting in December 1945, where Bird and Dizzy Gillespie brought frenetic sounds of bebop from the East Coast jazz underground to the West Coast for a two-month residency at Billy Berg’s Hollywood jazz club. This marked the beginning of a tumultuous two year-stint for Bird bumming around L.A., showing up at jam sessions, crashing on people’s couches, causing havoc in public places, and recording some of his most groundbreaking tracks, “A Night in Tunisia” and “Ornithology,” as well as “Relaxin’ At Camarillo,” inspired by the end of his time in SoCal at the Camarillo State Hospital. The novel explores Bird’s relationship with the characters and events he encountered during his time in L.A. including recording some of his signature songs with Dial Record founder Ross Russell, a brief but influential stay at the home of famed jazz photographer William Claxton, a party for the ages at the ranch home of artist Jirayr Zorthian, and others who found themselves in the orbit of the jazz genius.

“This is one of the greatest projects we have ever had the privilege to be a part of” says publisher Josh Frankel. “The passion that Dave and Peter put into this work is unparalleled, and to add the words of one of the most prolific cultural critics, let alone one of the greatest athletes in history is truly humbling for all of us. We are certain that this is destined to be one of the graphic novels of the year, if not a high watermark for the decade ahead.”

Chasin’ The Bird is being released during the centennial of Bird, dubbed Bird 100, as one of the many initiatives celebrating the extraordinary career of the trailblazing jazz icon, including exciting new music releases, festivals and events, prestigious exhibitions, special partnerships, exclusive collectible art, and myriad of independent appreciations and concerts. This special graphic novel, named for Charlie Parker’s 1947 standard, and adapts one of the sunnier, but darker chapters in the life of Bird, and is available for preorder now directly through the Z2 webstore. The deluxe limited edition includes a vinyl 45, and both are released in conjunction with a new album from Verve Records/UMG spanning Bird’s L.A. period. The details of the tracks accompanying the graphic novel, and the upcoming album will be announced soon.

About Charlie Parker:
If jazz history can be divided into two epochs — danceable swing and improvisational bebop — then Charlie Parker is the fault line. During his brief but remarkable career, the alto saxophonist nicknamed “Bird” gave jazz lightning tempos, mind-bending chord substitutions, and previously unexplored harmonic depth, paving the way for hard bop, free jazz, fusion and everything after. Miles Davis summed up his accomplishments: “You can tell the history of jazz in four words. Louis Armstrong. Charlie Parker.” Parker, who died in 1955 at only 34, was a meteoric musician that burned bright and much too quick. But his legacy more than lives on; it’s jazz scripture. Jack Kerouac called him “as important as Beethoven.” Four of his recordings were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame including albums Charlie Parker With Strings and Jazz At Massey Hall and the songs “Ornithology” and “Billie’s Bounce.” In 1974, he was awarded a posthumous Grammy for Best Performance By A Soloist for “First Recordings.” In 1988, the Clint Eastwood-directed biopic “Bird” brought his story to the silver screen. The U.S. Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp in his honor in 1995. The Parker composition “Koko” was included in the National Recorded Registry in 2002, declaring the song as “culturally, historically, or aesthetically important, and/or inform(s) or reflect(s) life in the United States.” Although his life and career were short, the New Yorker has praised Parker as “one of the wonders of twentieth-century music” and the New York Times deemed him “matchless” and a “bebop exemplar.” Parker’s popularity continues to grow as the world celebrates the 100th birthday in 2020.

About Kareem Abdul-Jabbar:
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made a name for himself with his un-blockable Skyhook which helped him become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. Kareem’s mantra is: “I can do more than shoot a ball through a hoop, my greatest asset is my mind." Growing up under the two biggest media spotlights in the world (New York and Los Angeles) during the Civil Rights era as quite literally the most visible black man in the country has given Kareem a unique perspective on America’s political and social landscape. This viewpoint has allowed him to make a significant impact in today's political and pop culture.  Kareem is also known as jazz historian with a lifelong love for the music.

Book Review: THE GALAXY NEEDS YOU by Caitlin Kennedy

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER - - THE GALAXY NEEDS YOU by Caitlin Kennedy, writer, Eda Kaban ,illustrations. (Disney Lucasfilm Press, December 2019) Hardcover, 48 pages.  ISBN # 1368051820 / 9781368051828.

 Summary on the Goodreads website . . . . .

Have you ever stopped to think about how there is nobody else in the galaxy who is exactly like you? This empowering picture book celebrates young heroes-in-the-making and features illustrations that follow Rey on her own hero's journey.

My Five-Star Review on the Goodreads website . . . . .

I picked this up for my five-year old grandson, who is interested in most things Star Wars (cartoons, children's books, comics, Lego's, movies, television, etc). He was able to follow along and read aloud most of the words.

This serves as a neat inspirational book to help develop self-confidence and feelings of importance among young readers. I though the message conveyed through familiar Star Wars characters (most prominently Rey) was well done. There's not a complex plot here, as the story is told mostly in flashback scenes from the films. The art is compelling and sharp.

My FIVE-STAR Review on the Goodreads website . . . . .

There are two incredible stories in here that make this well worth the asking price of $7.99.

A long novella by Nancy Kress is the topper. "Sempus Augustus" is a coming-of-age tale of a young girl from birth into her early twenties set against the back-drop of a near future (before and after 2037) that doesn't seem too far away from our present circumstances. Aliens have brought new technology to Earth and that, coupled with the rise of automation and robotics, has created a huge class of low income and unemployed living in cities too poor to maintain services adequately. There's an organized group that is turning to violence in their methods of resistance to government, big corporations, and bling-asses (the wealthy elite). Kress focuses on the social aspects and human characters of her story rather than the technology, and this makes for very compelling and fluid reading. Poor Jennie, abandoned by her mother, raised by a hard-nosed grandmother who kept her isolated until the age of eight, possessed of echo memory and growing up fast once she gets to school and beyond (a short lived career as a clothing model, then active engagement with the resistance group). The ending ties up all storylines very neatly. It's been decades since I've read anything by Kress, and I've forgotten how good of a storyteller she is. This stands up with her best. FIVE STARS.

Also make a note to check out this one - - "Beyond The Tattered Veil Of Stars" by Mercurio D. Rivera. It deserves to find a place in one of Best-Of-Year anthologies. A scientist hoping to determine the tipping points of a climate plagued Earth constructs a miniature virtual Earth, populates it with several different intelligent species (none human) and then creates disasters and conflicts, learning from how they handle the situation in order develop some answers/solutions for humankind. This takes an unexpected turn near the end. Brilliant. FIVE STARS out of a possible Five Stars.

I

t's been several years since I picked up an issue of Asimov's Science Fiction magazine. If this issue is any indication of the usual quality of the contents then I need to revisit more often. The March/April 2020 issue is consistently above average and offers a good variety of stories and themes. Some of the highlights for me were:

"A Summary Of Our Neighborhood's Salvation After The Storm" by Jason Sanford about an evangelical organization rolling a truck into a devastated neighborhood following a natural disaster and promising salvation with the assist of some high-tech tools. But what the neighborhood really needs is fool and assistance. I couldn't help but hear "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" by Neil Diamond running through my head as I was reading this. FOUR STARS.

The highly imaginative "Skin" by Garrett Ashley tells of gelatinous alien beings trying to assimilate into Earth society by squeezing into skin suits, which often become worn out and develop tears and rips which allow their true essence to ooze out with disastrous effects. FOUR STARS.

A desert highway motel completely automated becomes a trap for Rena in "Rena In The Desert" by Lia Swope Mitchell, an engaging story that I didn't want to end because it left too many unanswered questions about the state of the world and Rena's objectives. Here's hoping Mitchell decides to expand this into a novel. FOUR STARS.

"So Long As We Both" by Tom Purdom is a speculative tale about immortality as a far-future married couple consider whether to have another child (surrogate mother), an issue that requires them to seek counseling as it becomes divisive. Thoughtful and interesting, although I'm not sure what the author's main point is. THREE AND ONE-HALF STARS.

T

here is some great world-building in "Opportunity Space" by Nathan Hillstrom as well as a highly imaginative and visualized alien race. However, the story suffers a bit from being a bit longer than needed, and in some parts the tech and alien physiology are a bit too vague for clarity. I did not empathize with the main character until the very end. THREE AND ONE-HALF STARS.

AFTERSHOCK Update: New SHADOW DOCTOR Title Based On A True Story

JULY 28, 2020

Rumbling - The New Aftershock Newsletter

HIS STORY IS AMERICA’S STORY

Shadow Doctor

AfterShock Comics is honored to team once again with writer Peter Calloway (THE LAST SPACE RACE, Gotham City Sirens) to tell the story of SHADOW DOCTOR, one of the most profoundly fascinating, startling and significant stories we’ve ever published. Years in the making, this is the true story of Peter’s grandfather, Nathaniel Calloway, a Black man who graduated from medical school in the early 1930s. Unable to get work at any Chicago hospital (because he was Black) and unable to secure a loan from a bank to start his own practice (because he was Black), Nathaniel turned to the only other source of money in Prohibition-era Chicago: the Mafia, run by none other than Al Capone.

As Peter himself says, “On the one hand, his story represents the promise of America. On the other hand, it shows the worst of it.”

Set to debut in February 2021, SHADOW DOCTOR features the artwork of Eisner Award winner Georges Jeanty (The American WayX-Tremists) and covers illustrated by the inimitable Mark Chiarello (!!) The Hollywood Reporter has a First Look here.

!Alert!: BAD IDEA Pushed My Hot BUTTON. Now I'm A Servant!

Bad Idea Now Serves “The Button” (And You Can, Too!)
– WE HAVE BEEN SELECTED –

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably heard of Bad Idea — the unruly and experimental comic book publisher that was just weeks away from releasing its first title earlier this year until…we were contacted by something we can neither rationally explain nor fully understand.

It calls itself “The Button.”

For months, fans have been clamoring to know when Bad Idea will release its first comic. The answer is simple: We can’t…because, seemingly overnight, The Button has assumed control of every facet of Bad Idea — commandeering everything from our publishing plan to our generous suite of employee perks. (“Ping-Pong Fridays,” RIP.) But, most startlingly of all, it will not let Bad Idea begin its launch until it has collected what it wants — what it demands — from all of us:

One billion clicks. 1,000,000,000,000. That’s billion with a “b,” friend.

At first, we started clicking ourselves. Then, our families, our neighbors, our pool boys, our paleo culinary consultants. Then, our writers, our artists, and on and on and on. But it wasn't enough.

Yes, friends — its magnitude The Button demands to be clicked, and it knows to whom it must now extend its burdensome grace: YOU. It has seen you. It has judged you. And it still likes you anyway.

To achieve its purpose, The Button has guided our hands in shaping ServeTheButton.com — something new that we’re calling a “website,” to coin a phrase (hope it sticks) — where its spectacular totality will receive your clicks, every second of every hour of every day, until it has sated its inestimable void. It also is a lot of fun to play with and looks pretty cool, if we’re being honest about it:

Bask, nay tremble, before the grandeur of The Button's colossal titanicness. Pretty impressive, huh?

So, starting this second, here’s what you need to do:

1) Don’t go home, there is no time. 2) Click it and don’t stop, no matter what anyone tells you especially us. 3) Follow Bad Idea on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram to hear The Button speak and earn its favor. From time to time, The Button may issue new challenges, demand offerings, or reveal its manyfold enigmas. Make sure you are listening when it does. 4) Accept it. The Button is running the show now, and there’s no going back, jack. Steel yourself for the months of The Button’s domination that yet await.

We can only speculate as to The Button’s true origin and motives, and we know neither how nor why it seeks this outcome. All we can say for certain is that we must comply to bring Bad Idea to comic shops as we've all long hoped, dreamed, and aspired...or face the grave consequences of cosmic imbalance.

What is the truer purpose: to push or to be pushed? This is the wisdom The Button yokes from those who attend it. It is the mystery of revelation, the intention of design, the servitude of purpose. Also, America’s new favorite pastime. Click it! CLICK IT!

ONE BILLION CLICKS AND BAD IDEA BEGINS!

ONE BILLION CLICKS AND BAD IDEA BEGINS!

GO GO GO! DON'T STOP CLICKING! IT'S FUN! NEVER STOP CLICKING! NEVER --

– WHAT HAPPENS NEXT...? –

Not gonna lie, it's probably going to get pretty intense from here on out, so get those game faces on.

We’ll say it again: Earn The Button’s favor by following Bad Idea on FacebookTwitter, and InstagramWhen The Button speaks, pay tribute to its magnitude, perform its challenges, and receive its gifts — those who do will be richly rewarded.

The Button will issue its first edict today at 12 pm ET/9 am PT. So it has been foretold.

In the meantime, surrender your email address to The Button's will, so you don't miss a single milestone on the march to one billion clicks.

But don’t forget to click. Whatever you do, never forget to click. We’re counting on you.

– APOCRYPHA –

Its magnitude The Button knows all. That means everything. Including that.
Recognize the circle inside yourself. Follow it all the way around. Then around again.
The Button contains multitudes and will also be formally recognized as The One Above All, Magic Mike XXL, and the Owner-Proprietor of Big Cheese LLC, in addition to a number of other quasi-legal, but mostly spiritual, aliases and sobriquets.
Keep telling yourself it’s just a button. Trust us, we tried that.
Learn to recognize fellow Attendants of The Button. You may already know one. Perhaps several. They may be closer than you think.
You’re kidding yourself if you thought Joker was any good, you fucking nerd.
The Button gets pretty crabby on Mondays, so let’s try to keep it upbeat, okay?
Bad idea does not endorse the views of The Button or followers of the Remunerated Sect of Buttonology.
If the Button commands it, you better get on that.
