The Jury

An esteemed jury of comics professionals will participate in the nomination process, selecting favorite works in over 20 categories. The 2018 jury was chosen as a representative cross-section of the comic book industry, with members representing seasoned and venerated educators, retailers, press, and creators across numerous genres.
Michael Cavna
Michael Cavna is a cartoonist and creator of The Washington Post's Eisner-nominated Comic Riffs column. He is also emcee and co-programmer of the Graphic Novel Pavilion events at the Library of Congress's annual National Book Festival. In 2017, Cavna's work was honored by the National Headliner Awards and the national Society for Features Journalism. A San Francisco native and UCSD alum, Cavna also wrote the Harvey Award-nominated prose for the Eisner Award-nominated anthology book Team Cul de Sac: Cartoonists Draw the Line at Parkinson's. His viral "Wise Up" cartoon launched the #Draw4Atena campaign on behalf of the jailed Iranian artist-activist Atena Farghadani, and his updated-monthly cartoon marked the 545-day detention of American-Iranian journalist Jason Rezaian. Those cartoon campaigns were cited by the National Press Club, the Poynter Institute and the Cartoonist Rights Network International. Cavna has created artwork and features for five syndicates, including Universal Uclick/Andrews McMeel.  Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz once told Cavna at a black-tie awards dinner: "You do funny things"; to this day, he does not know for sure whether Schulz was referring to Cavna's syndicated comic Warped or to his tragically askew cummerbund.
Marty Grosser
Marty Grosser is the Editor of Diamond Comic Distributors' PREVIEWS catalog, and has been involved with the publication since its inception in October of 1988. Before that, he started in the comics industry in the summer of 1981 as a counterman and Assistant Manager for Northern California's Comics & Comix retail chain. In 1986, he left C&C for comics distributor, Bud Plant, Inc., where he worked in the Customer Service department before becoming the writer of BUD PLANT'S QUICKLIST (the catalog precursor to PREVIEWS) in 1987. This position eventually lead to his move to Maryland in 1988 following the purchase of BPI's West Coast distribution network by Diamond Comic Distributors.
Karla Marsh-Southern
Karla Marsh-Southern is the Event and Exhibitor Coordinator for Heroes Aren't Hard to Find and the Heroes Convention located in Charlotte, NC. She has served the Heroes Convention for over 14 years, and has done so in a full-time capacity for the past six. She began attending the Heroes Convention 13 days before her actual birth in June of 1982 when her mother agreed to accompany her brother to Charlotte's first "Comic Book Convention". She has attended every Heroes Convention since, with this year's show marking her 36th consecutive Heroes Convention. Learning to read using Wonder Woman and Batman comics in the early 1980's, Karla is an avid reader of series from across all genres. She is also a life-long fan of all things Masters of the Universeand has assisted in the management of the He-Man and She-Ra-themed Convention, Power-Con based out of Los Angeles, CA.

He is featured in the ground-breaking books Black Comix: African American Independent Comics, Art and Culture and The History of American Graffiti"I have always believed that all art is relative," says Stull. "Sequential Art is a storytelling medium, but most visual art is telling a story of some kind."

He started his career in comic books working as an assistant to comic book artists Adam Pollina on X-Force, and Kevin McGuire on Trinity Angels. INKWELL AWARDS 2018 launches with new Ms. Inkwell

 From the official B.A.D. Comics Publicity press release . . .. . .

(New Bedford, MA/USA–March 29, 2018)

The non-profit Inkwell Awards will debut a new spokesmodel, Skylar Lauren Godwin, as Ms. Inkwell at the Garden State Comic Fest: Atlantic City Edition on April 7-8, the next stop on their 2018 10th Anniversary show tour.

The debut of the new spokesmodel is coming together with the announcement the Inkwell Awards, with the official public ballot will be available on the Inkwells’ homepage from April 1 through April 15.  Go to:  http://www.inkwellawards.com

“We’re as excited as ever for this event, where the best of the best ink artists and their work get the recognition they deserve,” said Bob Almond, founder and director of The Inkwell Awards. “Though inkers have their own fans and followers, many often go unnoticed or are glossed over by most awards events. Ours caters specifically to ink artists and allows them to be recognized and appreciated in various categories. We encourage everyone who appreciates good work to participate; the more voters, the better.”

The Ms. Inkwell role is to serve as the advocacy’s public face, meet and greet creators and fans at shows, help with fundraising and raise awareness for their mission of education and promotion for the art of comic-book inking. Skylar, an avid cosplayer from North Carolina, was scheduled to debut at a later show to work beside the current Ms. Inkwell, Hailey Skaza-Gagne, who would train her. Skaza-Gagne had to cancel and Godwin was asked to start early.

“Hailey had a private family issue and needed to take a break for at least this appearance,” said Bob Almond, the Inkwells’ founder and director. “She’s been our exclusive Ms. Inkwell for a record 21 events and nearly three straight years of exemplary service and work ethic. She just hates disappointing the fans and creators whom she truly cherishes, but is confident Skylar can do the job. Skylar has a sincere enthusiasm and passion for this role and can’t wait to start.”

Said Godwin,”I was so excited when Bob Almond asked me to be apart of the Inkwell family this year as they celebrate their 10th anniversary. Heroes Con 2014 was actually the first time I met Bob and was introduced to the Inkwell organization. Little did I know that 4 years later I would be asked to be a part of this wonderful non-profit and have the great opportunity to work with such amazing people.”.

One or both Ms. Inkwells will also appear at the East Coast Comicon in Seacaucus, NJ, on April 27-29 and at the organizations’s eighth annual live awards ceremony at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC, on June 15-17.

The character of Ms. Inkwell was created by Almond and Randy Green to garner more attention for their booth at shows. Since the spokesmodel’s first live appearance in April 2010 at the Pittsburgh Comicon, the role has been taken up by over a dozen talented women at various venues. The Inkwell Awards recently published the fundraiser “Ms. Inkwell Gallery Book,” featuring the character’s history along with exclusive pinup art from many contributing artists.

The Inkwell Awards is the only existing official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to educate and promote the art form of comic-book inking, as well as annually recognize and award the best ink artists and their work. Now approaching its 10-year anniversary, the organization is overseen by a committee of industry professionals, and assisted by various professional ambassadors and contributors. They sponsor the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Kubert School and host the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award.

Kickstarter finds: PINPRICKS, a book of tiny and terrible oddities

EDITOR’S NOTE:  Here’s another Kickstarter project brought to my attention.  I’m reminded of the early work of Jeff Lemire. If Pell’s project contains just one-half of the creativity of Lemire, then it’s worth checking out . . . . . .

for immediate release

DARK, STRANGE, and often HUMOROUS, Pinpricks is made up of 101 unique short stories and illustrations. 128 page Hardcover with some the most troubling tales.

From Jason Pell, the creator of Zombie Highway, Suicide 5, and Season's End, comes his next acclaimed offering.

Recalling the horror-themed books from his youth and with the help of his daughter, Mallory, the author has created something unique and at the same time, disquietingly familiar. A book that will give both the young and the young at heart... a case of incurable heebie-jeebies.

To get backers excited, several of the rewards on Kickstarter will ONLY be available through the campaign and discontinued afterward. With already almost 1/3 funded within 24 hours, the need for dark tales is evident!

New Comic Wednesday Review: SINK #5

SINK #5 of 5  (Comix Tribe, March 28, 2018 release date) “White Dog”.  Story by John Lees. Art by Alex Cormack. Colours by Alex Cormack & Lisa Moore. Letters by Shawn Lee.  Logo by Tim Daniel.

“But that’s Sinkhill.  We’re all broken toys here.”

Welcome back for a final look at the fictional Scottish borough of Sinkhill, a strange, savage and rough place to live. You can move away if you’re lucky enough. But if you grew up here, Sinkhill goes with you. It’s always there.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t any good people living in Sinkhill. You may not recognize them because they’re just a little harder, a little tougher than more civilized folk. It’s a survival skill.

Mature teenager or collegiate-aged (I’m guessing) Emma Callaghan is one such resident. She’s learned to cope and adapt, growing up without a father in a walk-up apartment. Dealing with a disabled mother who’s near the point of giving up and quitting. Emma has to coax her out of the wheelchair, and she does. She finds solace in her little white terrier, Snowy.

When Snowy goes missing, Emma is right to worry that he might have been snatched for bait purposes in a dog-fighting ring.  She seeks help from a gang member (Jordan of the Dickheads) and is directed towards the Black Hole club, owned by Si McKirdie (a familiar crime boss from SINK Issue #2). Fearless Emma works her way into the club, and meets transgender brawler Florence Kilcomb (a prominent character from SINK #2), who advises her to take her search to the head honcho’s residence.

McKirdie’s place is like a high-end Gothic castle, decorated with skulls and the finest in kitchen accoutrements. McKirdie is a tad eccentric, but bold Emma confronts him with his responsibility for the consequences of what his employees do. McKirdie feels compelled to help, and they depart for an isolated garage where one of his captains is operating a dog-fighting arena.

It’s a bloodbath. McKirdie changes policy, which means someone has to pay. From this point, it gets even uglier than a dog-fight. Just as vicious dogs can be converted to loyal pets by “someone tough as nails to keep him right”, a measure of kindness emerges from McKirdie.

The final pages acknowledge the previous four issues with one-panel flashbacks as the captions detail a last message.

“Everyone else thinks we’re trash, and it’s so easy to think of ourselves the same way. . . .

“There ’s something called the Glasgow effect . . . like, just by being here makes you more likely to die sooner . . .

“You get all kinds in Sinkhill - - good and bad . . . just like anywhere else.”

 RATING SYSTEM

STORY:  For as brutal as this end cap story is, it’s also quite touching. There’s a lesson and moral at the end. It’s heartwarming and not preachy. Nice way to go out with a feel-good message. Takes the edge off of what readers have just witnessed. End on a high point.  3 POINTS.

ART: Telling facial gestures and body language. The text-free panels are so expressive. Always appropriate choice of colors that burst like broken blood vessels. Graphic violence, as brutal as the nature of the story. If you are disturbed by pet abuse, take a tranquilizer before reading.  3 POINTS.

COVER:  Simple and attention getting. 2 POINTS.

READ AGAIN?   I want to. You will too. 1 POINT.

RECOMMEND? Yes. The whole series deserves more attention. And, I believe there are more SINK stories in the future. It’s a big town, and there’s more to share. 1 POINT.

TOTAL RATING: 10 POINTS. I’ve said this about SINK before: this series has been a very pleasant surprise. Great concept. Memorable stories. My favorite mini-series of 2017-2018.

Sneak Peek: HARBINGER WARS 2 coming May 30

from the official Valiant press release . . . . . .

First Look: HARBINGER WARS 2 #1 – Matt Kindt & Tomás Giorello Charge into Valiant’s Earth-Shattering Comics Event on May 30th!

Valiant is proud to present your first look within the pages of HARBINGER WARS 2 #1 (of 4), the FIRST ISSUE of the summer’s most anticipated comics crossover event! On May 30th, New York Times best-selling writer Matt Kindt (DIVINITY, Mind MGMT) and breathtaking artist Tomás Giorello(NINJA-K) – the best-selling team behind X-O MANOWAR – push the Valiant Universe to its breaking point and beyond with a world-shaking opening volley to begin the senses-shattering clash of 2018!

For the rare and immensely powerful subset of humanity known as psiots, their unique abilities have come with an enormous cost. Once, their existence was known only to a select few. Now, the revelation that thousands of these latent telekinetic “harbingers” secretly live among us…with the potential to become active at any moment…has led the American government to a dramatic tipping point…

Armed with new extra-governmental authority, the deep-black military contractor known as Omen has been authorized to identify, evaluate, and, if need be, eliminate all super-normal threats to the homeland. H.A.R.D. Corps units have been deployed into cities and towns across the United States to enforce their orders.

In the East, one of the most powerful minds on Earth, Peter Stanchek, is leading his band of Renegades across the country, activating any potential psiots willing to join them, and building an insurrection force of ultra-powerful and unwieldy new abilities that will soon bring war to Omen’s doorstep…and the unstoppable force known as X-O Manowar raging back to Earth…

In the West, Livewire – the telekinetic technopath with the ability to bend machines and computers to her will – will be forced to choose between her former allies…or her newfound team of Secret Weapons. As the situation escalates beyond human control, the United States will be plunged into darkness from coast to coast, launching Bloodshot and Ninjak into a dangerous mission to neutralize their one-time teammate – and setting the stage for the most shocking, most violent, and most consequential clash of powers ever witnessed in the history of the Valiant Universe!

This summer, Valiant’s biggest and most ambitious event yet takes hold…and, on May 30th, all of America will witness the raw, unrepentant power of the Valiant Universe unleashed in HARBINGER WARS 2 #1 (of 4) – featuring covers by J.G. Jones (Final Crisis), Mico Suayan (BLOODSHOT REBORN), Juan José Ryp(BRITANNIA), Felipe Massafera (Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern), and Lewis LaRosa (BLOODSHOT SALVATION)!

But first: JUMP ON BOARD with HARBINGER WARS 2: PRELUDE #1 – a STANDALONE INTRODUCTION TO THE VALIANT UNIVERSE’s most powerful forces from all-star creators Eric Heisserer, Raúl Allén, and Patricia Martín, the master storytellers that brought you SECRET WEAPONS, on May 2nd!

The Harbinger Renegades have been scattered across America…battered by the brutal MASSACRE that decimated their ranks.

Now, behind them, Livewire – leader of the Harbinger Foundation’s most unusual group of Secret Weapons – is about to incite the coast-to-coast clash that brings them all together in an inescapable collision of power.

Pushed to the brink by the government she once served, Toyo Harada’s former star pupil is about to make an irreversible decision…and deactivate America’s power supply in a last-ditch bid to save the extraordinary individuals called “psiots” from extinction. As a nation goes dark, the paths of our world’s most powerful heroes will soon converge…and the stage will be set for the most cataclysmic confrontation in the history of the Valiant Universe!

On May 2nd, the creative team behind the best-selling SECRET WEAPONS will soon reshape the landscape of the Valiant Universe and plunge its heroes to new depths with a powerful standalone prologue, only in HARBINGER WARS 2: PRELUDE #1 – featuring covers by Raúl Allén (BLOODSHOT REBORN), Michael Cho (Batwoman), Cary Nord (X-O MANOWAR), and Felipe Massafera (Flashpoint: Abin Sur)!
