EXORCISM AT 1600 PENN Gets Film Treatment

IDW's ACCLAIMED COMIC 'THE EXORCISM AT 1600 PENN' CREATED BY HANNAH ROSE MAY GETS BIG SCREEN ADAPTATION FROM BLUMHOUSE-ATOMIC MONSTER

“...the next comic being added to the must-read list for any horror fan” - Andrew Dyce, Screen Rant

“...a high stakes political thriller with classic possession horror” - Dave Richards, Fangoria

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 30, 2026) – In a major crossover between the comic and film worlds, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster is adapting the breakout supernatural thriller comic book series, THE EXORCISM AT 1600 PENN. An IDW Publishing original horror from creator and writer, Hannah Rose May, and artist, Vanesa Del Rey, the acclaimed series will make the leap from page to screen in what is a landmark collaboration between one of horror’s most influential studios and one of the genre’s boldest emerging storytelling voices.

Set at the most famous address in the United States as it becomes a demonic battleground for good versus evil, THE EXORCISM AT 1600 PENN follows the first female president of the United States of America, as she balances boiling political tensions, the threat of World War III, being a mother to two teenagers, and a rapidly shifting media landscape.

Jason Blum will produce for Blumhouse, with Ryan Turek serving as executive producer. Series creator and writer Hannah Rose May and IDW Publishing CEO Davidi Jonas will also executive produce.

Getting to work with Blumhouse to bring THE EXORCISM AT 1600 PENN to the big screen feels like a dream come true,” commented May.  “Blumhouse has defined modern horror for a generation, and I could not be more excited to be working with them on this adaptation. I am so grateful to my incredible partners at IDW for their tireless work to share this story with audiences around the world.”
"We're truly honored to be working with such amazing partners like Blumhouse and Hannah Rose May on the adaptation of THE EXORCISM AT 1600 PENN,” stated Jonas. “We're so proud of this comic and we cannot wait for moviegoers to witness this horror masterpiece in theaters!"

“What immediately drew us to THE EXORCISM AT 1600 PENN was how grounded and urgent it feels,” said Ryan Turek, executive vice president, feature film development for Blumhouse. “Hannah has created a story that fuses classic possession horror with contemporary political tension in a way that feels bold and deeply human. It is exactly the kind of material we look for when we think about expanding horror into new spaces, and we are excited to identify a filmmaker who can bring this world to the screen with the scale and perspective it deserves.”

The adaptation underscores the growing cultural impact of May’s work, which combines grounded emotional stakes, contemporary political tension, and classic horror dread: a trifecta that has resonated strongly with both readers and critics.

The collected edition of THE EXORCISM AT 1600 PENN  is on sale now wherever graphic novels are sold. Series creator and writer Hannah Rose May has also crafted the eagerly anticipated sequel, THE EXORCISM AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE, with the debut issue releasing on March 11, 2026, and pre-orders are currently open at comic shops. Additionally, May continues to deliver fear to comic book readers with SMILE: FOR THE CAMERA #1, on sale February 18, 2026.

May is represented by Verve, Luber Roklin and Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz.

HARMED AND DANGEROUS IS COMING!

I have exciting news!

In just under a month, those lovely people at Crystal Lake Publishing will  release my latest novel – Harmed and Dangerous.

It’s a Southern Gothic, paranormal thriller, set in the steamy state of Louisiana. The plot involves time slips, small town horror and the mysteries surrounding an inscrutable serial killer. It’s dark and deeply emotional and addresses LGBTQIA themes as well the intensely personal nature of father/daughter relationships.

IS THIS A PERSONAL WORK?

Yes, it is. I wrote this novel at the prompting of both my daughters, back when they were teens. I’ve published 3 novels and four novellas since I first discussed it with them.

It’s been through a lot of drafts in that time. Why? Because I needed to get this one as close to perfect as I could.

SO, LET’S HEAR THE COVER BLURB!

Put yourself in Kyra’s place.

You're seventeen years old, lost and alone in a remote town in Louisiana. You're searching for the birth parents you never knew. The heat is crippling. The river often floods, washing houses away and lifting corpses from the ground.

The locals treat you with suspicion. You don't belong here. They're hiding something. All over town, in nooks and hidden alcoves, there’s evidence of a forbidden faith. They keep the old ways here, but no one will tell you what they are.

There's an intangible presence following you. Hiding in your peripheral vision. You can't see, hear or touch it, but you know it's there, waiting for its chance to claim you.

Then the episodes start.

Your vision goes and when it returns you're seeing the world as it was fifteen years ago. Physically you're in the present, but everything you see happened a decade and a half ago.

Suddenly you realize.

You’re seeing through the eyes of the serial killer who murdered your birth mother. He takes control of you, forcing you to watch as he stalks and brutally murders her.

And there’s nothing you can do to stop him. Because he died by lethal injection more than a decade ago.

SOUNDS AWESOME! WHERE DO I GET A COPY?

It’s currently available for pre-order over on Amazon. Hit the button below to reserve yourself a copy as soon as it releases.

My review of HOTEL MACABRE, VOLUME 2: Overall, FOUR STARS.

You can always count on Crystal Lake to publish well-curated anthologies with diverse themes, and HOTEL MACABRE is a good example of that.

Of the 24 stories here, my ratings averaged 3.5 stars - which is close enough to 4 stars for me.

I was not disappointed in any of these stories, and I have several favorites that I considered well above expectations. "Racing The Milk" by Robert Ford is presented through a video link and it is the five-star entry (in my opinion) worthy of award consideration and best-of collections.

These stories deserved a four-star rating: "Don't Cry For The Dead" by Graham Masterton and Kristina Megielska; "Gene of the Obscene" by Nick Roberts; "Death's Door" by Ben Eads; “:Dinner With The Schimbator” by Jasper Bark; ”Deep Cuts" by Michael Deadly; and "Unconditional" by John Durgin.

NOTES ON THE STORIES

DON’T CRY FOR THE DEAD by Graham Masterton and Kristina Mogielska

A chilling spin on vampire lore. Greive for the deceased too long and bad things can happen. Set within a peasant village, quaint but restless. FOUR STARS.

GENE OF THE OBSCENE by Nick Roberts

Grim, chilling, dark - - short and to the point. On the nose and disturbing. Does the killing gene get passed down through generations? FOUR STARS.

RACING THE MILK by Robert Ford - - The author gives an emotional reading of his story via a YouTube video. A man deals with grief by writing letters to his deceased wife. There’s a link to the video in the digital edition, and a QR code to access it in the paperback anthology. Powerful and moving. FIVE STARS.

DEATH’S DOOR by Ben Eads: This gets my vote as the creepiest story so far. A children’s book author is also a counselor for children suffering from terminal diseases and often makes deathbed visits to provide them false hope. It catches up to her in a very disturbing way. FOUR STARS.

DINNER WITH THE SCHIMBATOR by Jasper Barks - - A different spin on mythic themes - a Schimbator is a vampire with doppelgänger properties weaved into a story about secret orders of the Catholic Church, fundraising schemes, corruption and manipulation and family squabbles/in-breeding. It’s a lot to take in, which the longer story accommodates. FOUR STARS.

DEEP CUTS by Michael Deadly - - - A song becomes a social media fad that dares listeners to endure it for six minutes and sixty seven seconds incites a murder

spree that goes off the rails. FOUR STARS.

UNCONDITIONAL by John Durgin - - Very short, but it gets darker with every paragraph. A loving father devoted to his five-year old daughter worries that someday she will turn on him. He wants to preserve the good memories. Grim and unsettling. FOUR STARS.
