EDITOR’S NOTE: Small publishers depend on pre-orders. It helps them avoid over-printing or under-printing. They don’t have the same operating budgets as the Big Two publishers and mid-size comics companies. They depend on Diamond Distribution, the only game in town, to get their books out to the local comic shops, book stores, and news stands that still sell comics. Unfortunately, Diamond seems unable to process the re-orders when books from small publishers sell out. Alterna still works with Diamond, but has added an option of selling direct to comic shops to make sure their books get where they are wanted. Still, if those who are interested would just pre-order the Alterna titles they want, they wouldn’t have to worry about re-orders or second print runs. Alterna’s books go beyond standard comic fare and are more affordable due to using newsprint. Sonitus is a promising title. The Fubar books are always fun, re-writing important moments from history with an infusion of zombies. And, they are created locally in Maryland.
