Audiobook Review: HOLIDAYS ON ICE by David Sedaris

HOLIDAYS ON ICE  by David Sedaris  (Hachette Audio, October2001)  ISBN #1615583491/13:9781615583492.  Narrated by David Sedaris with Amy Sedaris and Ann Magnuson.  (Goodreads average rating 3.94)

 Summary from the Goodreads website:

David Sedaris's beloved holiday collection is new again with six more pieces, including a never before published story.

Along with such favorites as the diaries of a Macy's elf and the annals of two very competitive families, are Sedaris's tales of tardy trick-or-treaters (Us and Them); the difficulties of explaining the Easter Bunny to the French (Jesus Shaves); what to do when you've been locked out in a snowstorm (Let It Snow); the puzzling Christmas traditions of other nations (Six to Eight Black Men); what Halloween at the medical examiner's looks like (The Monster Mash); and a barnyard secret Santa scheme gone awry (Cow and Turkey).

I rated it 4 Stars. Bookshelves: Collection, family relationships, fok-lore, humor, nonfiction.  My review on the Goodreads website:

The benefits of the audio book version are many.

The narrator's inflections and tone add extra emphasis to each story.

Hearing the author's own voice made it more special in that I obtained a good feel for the person behind the words - - engaging, a little bit cynical but in such humorous ways, a great sense of the humor in ordinary things, and a creativity that adds spice to what might seem mundane.

Every story in here produced a chuckle, and ended satisfactorily except for the journal of the housewife who objects to the presence of some unwelcome family members. That was funny throughout but took a very nasty and shocking turn at the end that I didn't see coming.

There's some great stuff here, and I'm going to look for more from Sedaris - - maybe read the next one so I can savor his choice of words and phrases better.

New Book Release For All BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Fans

Sequart is proud to announce the publication of Somewhere Beyond the Heavens: Exploring Battlestar Galactica, edited by Rich Handley and Lou Tambone.

Glen A. Larson’s Battlestar Galactica only lasted for a single season, yet it earned its place among the most beloved science-fiction shows of all time. In 2003, Ronald D. Moore reimagined the story. This new take proved hugely popular, revitalizing the once-niche franchise. Moore’s Galactica successfully accomplished something few reboots of classic TV shows have ever managed to do: surpassing the original in scope and longevity. Like the Cylons, Galactica had evolved.

Somewhere Beyond the Heavens: Exploring Battlestar Galactica, edited by Rich Handley and Lou Tambone, examines the entire mythos, both televised and published, from 40 different perspectives, just in time for the show’s 40th anniversary. This anthology features insightful, analytical essays about Galactica‘s history, penned by popular comic historians, novelists, bloggers, subject-matter experts, and franchise insiders, including Samuel Agro, Jim Beard, Corinna Bechko, Joseph F. Berenato, Joe Bongiorno, Jeffrey Carver, October Crifasi, Steven Czarnecki, Julian Darius, Joseph Dilworth Jr., Matthew J. Elliott, Kelli Fitzpatrick, James Frenkel, Sabrina Fried, Caroline Glucksman, Robert Greenberger, Rich Handley, Amy Imhoff, Brandon Jerwa, Robert Jeschonek, Fiona Moore, John Kenneth Muir, Alex Newborn, Peter Noble, Alan J. Porter, Tony Simmons, Paul Simpson, Robert Smith?, Alan Stevens, and Lou Tambone, with a painted cover by beloved Galactica artist Chris Scalf.

You say you want to know more about Battlestar Galactica? So say we all.

The book runs a massive 572 pages, making it the longest book in Sequart history!

Somewhere Beyond the Heavens: Exploring Battlestar Galactica is available in print and on Kindle. (Just a reminder: you don’t need a Kindle device to read Kindle-formatted books; you can download a free Kindle reader for most computers, phones, and tablets.) Find out more on the book’s official page at

IDW's HASBRO Anthology Celebrates Women In Comics

San Diego, CA (December 18, 2018) — In recognition of Women’s History Month, IDW Publishing and Hasbro Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) have teamed up to create Synergy: A Hasbro Creators Showcase, a 48-page celebration anthology of fan-favorite creators and new talent working with many of the most beloved Hasbro characters.

The Synergy anthology features five brand-new stories: autobiographical works written by Mairghread Scott (drawn by Sara Pitre-Durocher, reuniting the creative team behind the Transformers: Till All Are One series) and Katie Cook (of the hit My Little Pony comic), plus original tales inspired by G.I. JoeTransformers, and Jem and the Holograms.

Mairghread Scott says, “Transformers is a brand that shaped both my childhood and adult life. I’m grateful for the chance to talk about what these amazing robots have meant to me, and others, over the years.”

Katie Cook says, “Hasbro was such an integral part of my upbringing. My Little Pony inspired a youth full of pastel imaginings and became a huge part of my cartooning career as I got the chance to make those imaginings real. I bonded with childhood friends over ponies in the 1980s, and as an adult, I crafted stories for My Little Pony alongside creators who have become the friends of a lifetime.”

In addition to storytelling, Synergy: A Hasbro Creators Showcase includes four new pin-ups, as well as a gallery of thirteen fabulous images from the IDW archives – dynamic illustrations that celebrate the women who have already made, or will soon make, an impact on the world of Hasbro for many years to come.

Synergy editor Megan Brown says, “This is a great coming together of creative talent and an amazing showcase for a host of wonderful authors, artists, and colorists — both old and new. I am beyond thrilled to be editing this compilation, and to be given the chance to highlight the amazing work of women in the comics industry.”

IDW Re-Launches TRANSFORMERS Series

from the official IDW Publishing press release . . . . .

Cybertron’s Golden Age of Peace and Prosperity, Shattered by a Single Death

San Diego, CA (December 18, 2018) — IDW Publishing proudly announces that a brand-new Transformers series will debut in March 2019 that will explore the very moment when a glorious, peaceful Cybertron begins its downward spiral into chaos.

Available twice monthly, IDW’s Transformerscomic will be written by Brian Ruckley, author of the Godless World fantasy trilogy, and illustrated by Angel Hernandez (Star Trek: Discovery – Succession) and Ron Joseph(Micronauts: Wrath of Karza).

In this new Transformers comic, IDW will explore Cybertron in ways never seen by audiences before – delving into an idyllic society, peaceful for thousands of years, as it faces the most momentous event in its history: the mysterious end of a single life. Through the eyes of young Bumblebee and his friends, fans will witness conspiracies forming, harmony giving way to conflict, and the very fabric of Cybertronian civilization tearing itself apart.

“Bringing Transformers fans this story is a real privilege,” says Brian Ruckley. “But just as important, it’s an amazing opportunity for new readers to discover and explore one of the biggest universes – and one of the best casts of characters – that science fiction has to offer, and to get in right at the start of a truly epic saga.”

Ron Joseph says, "In my youth, I devoured everything Transformers – toys, comics, the cartoon, the movie – with a Unicron-like hunger. ‘Robots in Disguise’ dominated my every waking moment. To join IDW’s creative team for the launch of a Transformers comic is staggering, and easily one of the greatest moments of my life."

“We are eager to begin this new chapter in Transformers storytelling,” says Michael Kelly, Hasbro’s Vice President of Global Publishing. “We are excited to begin a tale that will be accessible and appealing to readers unfamiliar with Transformers lore, while still providing the depth and drama that our long-time fans expect. It’s a big responsibility, but we’ve got the right team and the right characters to do it.”

The debut issue of this new Transformers comic will be available with multiple cover variants, by artists Gabriel RodriguezAngel HernandezCasey W. Coller, and Freddie E. Williams II. Issue #2, also available in March, will feature covers by Nelson DanielRon Joseph, and Jeffrey Veregge.

For information on how to secure copies of IDW’s new biweekly Transformers series, please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

Sneak Peek: PUNK MAMBO Coming In April 2019

First Look: PUNK MAMBO #1 Pencils Preview

Valiant is incredibly proud to reveal an eye-catching first look at Adam Gorham's detailed pencils from PUNK MAMBO #1, the debut issue from the British voodoo priestess' five-issue limited series launching in April 2019! PUNK MAMBO was recently announced as part of the BREAKTHROUGH slate, Valiant's lineup of upcoming titles that serve as great jumping-on spots while also expanding the shared universe.

From the twisted minds of Cullen Bunn (Venom) and Adam Gorham (Rocket), Punk Mambo's upcoming adventure is full of action, horror, and laughs. "Punk Mambo is the kind of woman who haunts the dark corners of the Valiant Universe," Bunn told CBR. "She walks a tightrope through the deepest of shadows – shadows that will devour you if they get half the chance. She looks into the abyss...and if the abyss dares to stare back, she spits in its eye."

"My favorite page to draw so far has been pages 2-3 in this first issue," added Gorham. "I saw the chance to take an action beat and spread it across two pages. It was a lot of fun and gave me the chance to bring it and step up my game for this series." Give your eyes a treat and watch that scene unfold in Gorham's pencils for PUNK MAMBO #1 below!

Comics Review: DEADLY CLASS, Volume 1

DEADLY CLASS, Volume 1  (Image Comics, July 2014)  by Rick Remender, writer; Wes Craig, illustrator; and Lee Loughridge, colorist.

Paperback, 160 pages.  ISBN # 1632150034 (ISBN13: 9781632150035)

Summary from the Goodreads website . . . . .

It’s 1987. Marcus Lopez hates school. His grades suck. The jocks are hassling his friends. He can’t focus in class.

But the jocks are the children of Joseph Stalin’s top assassin, the teachers are members of an ancient league of assassins, the class he's failing is “Dismemberment 101,” and his crush has a double-digit body count.

Welcome to the most brutal high school on earth, where the world’s top crime families send the next generation of assassins to be trained. Murder is an art. Killing is a craft. At Kings Dominion School for the Deadly Arts, the dagger in your back isn’t always metaphorical.

Collecting the first arc of the most critically acclaimed new series of 2014, by writer RICK REMENDER (Black Science, Fear Agent) and rising star artist WESLEY CRAIG (Batman). Experience the 1980s underground through the eyes of the world’s most damaged and dangerous teenagers.

Collects DEADLY CLASS #1-6.

My review on the Goodreads website . . . . .

Four-star rating. Bookshelves: first-in-series, assassins, comic books, coming-of-age, urban crime, violence.

I wanted to read this in advance of the upcoming television series, which, if it follows the same script should be a great one to watch. However, the director and cinematographer are going to have their hands full trying to duplicate and match the amazing art style of Wes Craig.

Craig is definitely an illustrator to keep an eye on. His brilliant use of small panoramic panels and silhouettes to depict scenes of hyper violence and action work to great effect and really lend a punch to the proceedings. The chase scene in Issue #1 is not to be missed.

I've had an indifferent opinion to the story-telling of Rick Remender prior to this, but I'm really enjoying this one. While I haven't read everything that he's published, this could very well be his best work -- it's certainly my favorite -- and makes me want to check out Remender's Black Science and Low series. The difference here is that the fiction is based in part, granted after much exaggeration, on Remender's teen days on the mean 1980's streets of Phoenix, Arizona.

Despite having done something awful (and not fully revealed, just hinted at) in his past, main character Marcus is a sympathetic soul that you learn to care what happens to him. He gets put through the wringer in more ways than one before this first story arc ends.

The other characters are also well developed, and I can see some of them getting a bigger spotlight in future issues. That's a good thing too, as I suspect not all of them are going to be around as the series moves forward. This is certainly one worth checking out.
