EDITOR’S NOTE: This is Month Three of the revised feature titled PRE-ORDER PICKS. I will recommend books that I know are really good because I’ve either read an advanced review copy of a single issue - - or I’ve read all the individual issues that comprise a new trade paperback or hardcover being offered.
With all of these PRE-ORDER PICKS keep in mind - - if you are interested, don’t take a chance on the store having a copy. Make sure by pre-ordering. Your local comic shop will thank you. Guaranteed sales help make them profitable. Please place your order before Wednesday, MAY 22 - - which is the cut-off date.
This month I did a little better by starting early, which gave me time to re-read some of my picks and then write a review. However, with the deadline fast approaching (two days away as I write this) I’m going to have to list the rest of my picks and skip the review for a later date (if ever). If you trust me, know that these are good books. If not, just scroll back this month and check out my detailed reviews on the other picks. Here’s the rest of the bunch . . . . .
HERALD: LOVECRAFT AND TESLA Volume 1 (Action Lab Entertainment) (W) John Reilly (A) Tom Rogers, Dexter Weeks (CA) Jack Ciolli. Collects Herald: Lovecraft & Tesla #1-3. Previews order # MAY191276. In shops June 12, 2019 $11.99, trade paperback.
I read this series back when it was initially released in 2014-2015 - - - glad to see it getting collected now. Better late than never. The series ran for nine issues, so I’m guessing there will be two more volumes forthcoming. Packaging it this way in an affordable trade paperback at $11.99 might entice some readers to pick this up that might have passed on a longer and more expensive collection.
The story centers around a meet-up between writer H. P. Lovecraft and inventor Nikola Tesla. Tesla gave his girlfriend and aviator Amelia Earhart an experimental device to assist with her famed transcontinental flight. Students of history how what happened to her. Tesla is trying to locate and recover her, and the trail leads him to Lovecraft. Can a crazed group of Cthulu cultists and the dangerous text (Necronomicon) be far behind. Guest appearance by Albert Einstein.
This is amusing, engaging and entertaining. Writer Reilly puts some quirks in his character to flesh out their personalities and show the human, imperfect side of these two legends. Artist Rogers has an uncluttered, economical style that lends itself well to the proceedings, especially in the well-portrayed action scenes and various facial expressions and body language of Howie and Nick. While there is a resolution of sorts in Volume One, the story is far from over. If you get hooked, you’ll have to wait on Volume Two, etc.
STILETTO Volume 1 (Lion Forge) (W) Palle Schmidt (A/CA) Palle Schmidt. Collects the extra-sized Issues #1, 2, 3. Previews order # MAY191798. Trade paperback $14.99. In shops July 10, 2019.
Only Issues #1 and #2 have appeared so far, so I’m not sure how this is going to end. I really enjoyed what I’ve read so far.
This is a gritty “dirty cop” story that opens with the bloody murder of two police officers guarding a witness. It’s suspected that a mole inside the department tipped off the criminals who nabbed the witness, current whereabouts unknown. No one knows who the leaker is, identified as the mysterious “Stiletto” - - so everyone is looking over their shoulder, trusting no one and not sharing information. What make this more interesting than the typical police procedural is that readers learn the identify of Stiletto before Issue #1 ends, and then watch as Stiletto gets out of one jam after another. What is the end game.
Writer/artist tells a tale heavy with depth and personal insights into the police officer life. The art is clean and concise and appealing. I wasn’t sure who he reminded me of until I read the text piece in the back where Schmidt cites his influences (all good): Dave McKean, Ashley Wood, Bill Sienkiewicz.
DAREDEVIL VOLUME 1: TO KNOW FEAR (Marvel Comics) (W) Chip Zdarsky (A) Marco Checchetto, Chip Zdarsky, Lalit Kumar Sharma (CA) Julian Totino Tedesco. Collects Daredevil (2019) #1-6. Previews order # MAY190967. Trade paperback $15.99. In shops July 31, 2019
I don’t want to give away too much here, but I’m really enjoying the little spin/twist that Chip Zdarsky has brought to the Daredevil mythos. Coming off the precursor mini-series where Daredevil did a ton of soul-searching from his hospital bed and finally determined to stay the course. Now he’s back in action, which leads to the death of a minor criminal, Daredevil on the run from the police and soul-searching his whole purpose all over again. To top that off, his sensory powers aren’t at full strength. Grim and gritty with appropriately grim and gritty artwork to match.
DIE DIE DIE VOLUME 1 (Image Comics) (W) Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple (A/CA) Chris Burnham, Nathan Fairbairn. Collects Die Die Die Issues #1-8. Previews order # MAY190041. Trade paperback $19.99. In shops July 17, 2019.
Robert Kirkman still has it, as his new series attest. DIE DIE DIE is about a quartet of brother assassins (named after the four Beatles) competing with each other as the two members of the secret cabal that employs them work at cross purposes in a power struggle with the boys as collateral damage. Bloody and violent, and a hell of a fun ride.
After that, if you're still looking for things to order for July - - check out BLACK BADGE Volume 2 and BONE PARISH Volume 2, both offered from Boom! Studios. Don't worry, they are re-soliciting Volume 1 of both titles. Back Badge -- boy scouts trained like secret agents. Bone Parish -- a new leisure drug made from dead bodies. I love both of these titles, and plan to write extensive reviews on both at some future date.
