SABRE #5 (Eclipse Comics, 1983) On the run, Sabre and friends cross through an irradiated Oklahoma. This little bit of dialogue from 1983 describing what happened in Don McGregor's fictional post-apocalypse America is scary prophetic: "OF corse, the plagues of the 1990's hit America harder than the loss of one state (Oklahoma). I think it was that terrible disease that changed American's feeling about themselves - - they no longer thought of themselves as the Chosen People. . . . . . Let's face it. America hadn't had wide-spread death on its shores in living memory. The country was coming off the Fat Years of the 50's, 60's and 70's when, for the majority shelter, food and health came easy. . . . . . The Virus was truly the Great Equalizer. It had no respect for wealth, religion, race, you name it."
SUB-MARINER: MARVEL SNAPSHOTS #1 (Marvel) A respectful tribute to the post-war era of Timely Comics with a very moving and thoughtful reflection on PTSD following WW2. Namor's girlfriend takes him to Palisades Park where he mixes it up with an ex-Nazi villain and the All-Star Squadron has to intercede. Jerry Ordway's art is absolutely perfect. Hey, this is a guaranteed book at Captain Blue Hen. Call them now to reserve a copy for curbside pickup. 5 Stars.
FAMILY TREE #5 (Image) A young girl inherits genes that slowly transform her into a tree. Her family tries desperately to keep things from fatally progressing while fending off rednecks frightened by her condition. The story takes a gnarly twist as it branches off in a new unexpected direction as this issue ends. 4 Stars.
UNDONE BY BLOOD OR THE SHADOW OF A WANTED MAN #2 (Aftershock) Two stories in one. A young woman returns to the small town where her family was murdered to hunt down the culprits, and gets a valuable clue. A former gunslinger gets some help in his quest to rescue his son from a vicious gang. Both stories overlap and mesh together. Crime and western. Hoo hah! 4 Stars.
BAD RECEPTION #4 (Aftershock) This issue was delayed, but certainly delivers the goods here. An isolated wedding retreat without benefit of cell phones or social media gets deadly when a killer stalks the wedding party. Great lead-in to the upcoming final issue. 4 Stars.
X-RAY ROBOT #1 (Dark Horse) Mike Allred excels at weird story and art and this is no exception. This has a 60's feel to the story, and a 60's feel to the art - especially the clothing and architecture. This belongs among his best works. 4 Stars
BANG #2 (Dark Horse) Matt Kindt's homage to James Bond and super-spies introduces yet another interesting character to the mix. The story is coming along smoothly. A fun read. 4 Stars.
Finishing up my run of Sabre issues . . ...
SABRE #8 IEclipse Comics 1984) A heavy issue, with the contrast between Sabre shot by Joyful Slaughter (what a name!) and bleeding out while Melissa gives bloody birth to his twins. McGregor is poetic at times. 4 STARS.
SABRE #12 Sabre & Melissa recuperating at a rebel encampment in Snta Rosa while stranger things occur at a ballon factory run by three clowns in Virginia and a school for "escorts" at Heironymous Communications. Gotta give McGregor more props for his vivid imagination. 3 STARS.
