HORROR DOUBLE FEATURE one-shot (Source Point Press) The first story, "I Learned A Lot From My Old Man" is not for the squeamish. Neither is the very creepy "The Painting." 4 Stars.
AIRBOY #51 (It's Alive) Picking up where the Eclipse series left off with Chuck Dixon writing again. A fun, pulpy style adventure comic. 3 Stars.
ALTERS VOLUME 1 (Aftershock) A young woman makes the transition from man to woman while also being affected by a mutation that grants her super powers. Double trouble. 4 Stars
BLOODSHOT BOOK ONE (Valiant) The 2019 version written by Tim Seeley. Bloodshot gets independence from PRS control and thinks for himself. Two secretive agencies tag him, one to kill him and the other to recruit him. Boom. Boom. Bang. Bang. 3 Stars.
HARLAN ELLISON'S CHOCOLATE ALPHABET (Last Gasp Eco-Funnies 1978) A cool underground black n white blast from the past with Ellison writing a short story for each letter of the alphabet (what an imagination!) and letting Larry Todd go crazy illustrating it. Five Stars.
BUBBA HO-TEP AND THE COSMIC BLOOD-SUCKERS #1 - 4 (IDW 2018) Loved the Bubba Ho-Tep movie as well as Joe R Lansdale's original story. This is a prequel (sort of) adapted by Joshua Jabcuga that is really disappointing. Lackluster effort long on weirdness but short on substance. Real Elvis is pretty uninteresting compared to Fake Elvis. I miss him. This ran for 5 issues, and I don't even care how it ends. 1.5 Stars
T.H.U.N.D.E.R. AGENTS #1-8 (IDW 2013) True to the nature of the original series, with an engaging plot and moralistic ending by Phil Hester. Sacrifices get made for the greater good. Not as complex and deep as Nick Spencer's version for DC, but still worthwhile. 3.5 Stars.
ARTEMIS AND THE ASSASSIN #1 (Aftershock Comics, March 2020) So happy to read a physical copy of this after previously reviewing an advance digital copy that was in proof stage and hadn't been colored yet. Its a beautiful book and a great story 5 STARS.
You can read my review of this below. The #1 issue has extra content, four pages of a continuing story relating the early days of Mia and her assassin training that contains more character reveals.
YEAR OF THE VILLAIN HELL ARISEN #4 of 4 (DC) I had not read any of the previous issues, but was able to pick up on the plot. I have a long distance comic friend who wanted me to pick up Issue #3 but I was too late. Now waiting for the third printing. Super-powered Lex Luthor and The Batman Who Laughs vie for the attention of Great Perpetua. Only one gains favor (no spoilers). This is a lead in to the Death Metal series. Ho hum. It really annoys me that Batman Who Laughs has to speak in red text on a black background - -not always easy to read.
2 Stars.
UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY #5 (Image) I just love the creative world-building of the Scott Snyder/Charles Soule duo. Great art, wondrous settings, unusual characters - - but so many it's becoming difficult to remember the plot threads with a month between issues. I should have waited for the trade paperback to read at one time, but too excited not to. 4 Stars.
MORBIUS #5 (Marvel) I like Vita Ayala's take on this character, giving him some extra layers of depth. The Melter gets ahold of Morbius' experimental serum and fools with it ending in monstrous results. End of the first story arc. 3.5 Stars.
SABRE #4 (Eclipse Comics, 1983) Such a ground breaking comic series when it was originally published. Fantastic world-building in a post-apocalypse 2020 by the late great Don MGregor. Main character Sabre always reminds me of Jimi Hendrix, still does.
