EDITOR’S NOTE: Here’s something fun to occupy our thoughts instead of coronavirus concerns: read a bunch of comics and join in a fun challenge. Captain Blue Hen Comics has accepted the challenge of some friendly comic shops in Ohio and Texas - - and needs your help. Go to their Facebook page to learn all the details and sign up. I did, and I’m sharing some on my entries below the following notice from Captain Blue Hen Comics.
The Thousand Comic Book Challenge
The Captain has thrown down the gauntlet to the whole comic retailing community and believes the Captain Blue Hen faithful can collectively read 1000 comics before the fans of Alter Ego Comic in Lima, Ohio, Collected Comics and Games in Fort Worth, Texas, Space Cadets in Oak Ridge North, Texas. We're a small state- let's show we've got Big Readers.
Here’s the skinny- dig into your comic pile whether unread new issues or beloved back issues and start reading. Keep track of what you read- Title, issue #, a rating out of 5 stars, and a few words about the book (“Cap fights Mandroid” or “Batman acts Emo”) and send us the info. We’ll have a pinned post on Facebook and you can put the info in comments or you can e-mail us or Messenger us and we’ll keep them tallied up (and by “we” I mean the “Royal Jason”). We’ll keep you apprised of how we’re doing. Make the Captain proud.
Here's some books I read . . . . . .
RAI #5 (Valiant) 4 STARS
End of the first story arc. Rai and Eternal Warrior face off against the Red King's Raiders to defend the settlement of Hope Springs. Bloody good art!
SPIDER-MAN NOIR #1 (Marve) 4 STARS
Dark and mysterious 1930's version of Peter Parker/Spider-Man embarks with a femme fatale on a globe-trotting quest for a missing artifact.
THE MAN WHO EFFED UP TIME #2 (Aftershock) 5 STARS
Poor Sean Bennett. He went back in time one week and screwed everything up. He makes a noble effort to put it right, but something's not quite right.
JOIN THE FUTURE #1 (Aftershock) 5 STARS
As good an introductory issue as it gets. Move to the big city for free health care and everything seems too good to be true. A small band of country folks remain skeptical and rightly so.
GODKILLERS #1 (Aftershock) 4 STARS
Terrorrist groups enlist their ancient gods to help in their unholy wars. The U.S. has to respond by creating a special task force to counter attack.
Keep the book count growing!
Here's some more I read yesterday:
EDGAR ALLAN POE'S SNIFTER OF TERROR SEASON 2 #4.(Ahoy) A great cover homage to Steranko's Hulk. The adaptation of Poe's "The Black Cat" is funny and clever. 4 Stars.
SAVAGE BASTARDS #1 (Mad Cave) interesting western with two lawless bastards together on the run from the law. 3 Stars.
DECORUM #1 (Image) Imaginative art, but it can't save the wasted pages and cryptic nonsense from Hickman. Disappointing. 2 Stars.
SLEEPING BEAUTIES ASHCAN (IDW) Pick it up, because it's free. A decent intro to the upcoming series. Great art, but a story that jumps all over the place and hard to follow. Think I'd rather read the book. 2 Stars.
THE BUTCHER OF PARIS #1 - 4 (Dark Horse). Based on a true story about a serial killer in wartime Nazi-occupied Paris. Engaging and creepy. 4 Stars.
BANG #1 (Dark Horse) Wacky spy stuff from Matt Kindt, his tribute to pulps and adventure fiction a la James Bond. 4 Stars.
