2,021 Comic Book Quarantine Odyssey, Part One

I’ve been participating in a fun event on Facebook with Captain Blue Hen Comics, and now you can too - - - as long as you don’t mind reading a few comics and then sharing your thoughts about them in a sentence or more on their COMICS CHALLENGE Facebook page.  Go to your Facebook home page and in the search box enter “Captain Blue Hen Comics 1000 Comic Challenge” to join in.

This began as a challenge issued to Captain Blue Hen from some friendly comic shops in Texas and Ohio.  Captain Blue Hen Comics didn’t win that challenge, but they came close.  Then, they were invited to keep going and participate in the 2,021 COMIC CHALLENGE - - same rules, the winner is the shop/group that reads and posts 2,021 comics first.

I’ll share all my posts to the group on this blog page.  I’m going to begin numbering my entries, picking up where I left off with the 1,000 COMIC CHALLENGE.  I’m curious to see how long it takes me to read that many comics. I want the results to be realistic so I’m not going to binge read unless I happen to be in the mood.  There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t end up reading some comics, so we’ll see how long it takes me.

For the first challenge, I contributed  116 comics, so we’ll begin here with # 117 . . . . .

If you haven’t been reading DOCTOR DOOM (and you should be) please be advised there are some spoilers in my summary here . . . .

#117  DOCTOR DOOM #1  (Marvel, December 2019) Kang starts materializing beside Dr. Doom at inopportune moments and passes on cryptic messages. Doom has visions of a happy utopian world, an un-disfigured face, and a loving family life. Doom is a vocal critic of a climate control project on the moon. When missiles mysteriously launch from Latveria and destroy the moonbase, Doom is suspect #1, wanted dead or alive. Union Jack & Agent Zero are the first to try and apprehend him before his decision to surrender. A perfect start! FIVE STARS.

#118  DOCTOR DOOM #2. Doom escapes en route to New York, and is hiding out in witch Morgan Le Fey’s Queens apartment. Kang has also seen visions of the utopia in Doom’s glimpses of his future. Doom seeks a seer to find out if it’s true, only to run into Taskmaster. Still intrigued by the story here and the fabulous art. FIVE STARS.

#119  DOCTOR DOOM #3.  Decades in the future a clean-shaven Victor Von Doom addresses a global climate council with his vision of controlling the elements. In the present time, Doom is stuck in Mephisto’s Hell while his regent Zora preps for an invasion of Latveria by neighbor Symkaria. Dead, then resurrected. Kang shares a future he’s seen where Taskmaster kills Doom. FOUR STARS.

#120 DOCTOR DOOM #4. A pissed off Doom busts into A.I.M.’s secret hq to find who hired Taskmaster. The rightful heir to Latveria is introduced. FOUR STARS.

#121  DOCTOR DOOM #5. Doom wants to find the woman in his utopian dreams: Fruzsina. King Dimitri Fortunov is now King of Latveria. Doom meets Kang in a library and learns the meteorologist Fruzsina Markovich will become his future wife. FOUR STARS.

#122 DOCTOR DOOM  #6. A fun issue. Doom is determined to take his country back, and heads there via Texas (?) with Kang’s assistance. The two converse about their relationship. Who’s the father, who’s the son? Brothers? Some chance encounters with disrespectful local residents are hilarious. Will Kang double cross Doom? Rhetorical question. FIVE STARS.

#123  IMMORTAL HULK #33/750.  Some incredible double-page art here. Just how many personalities can squeeze into one albeit quite large Hulk shell?  Confusing at times, but a fun read nonetheless. Love the twist at the end. Was sick of some of these villains anyway. FOUR STARS.
#124 - #128  OUTER DARKNESS, VOLUME 1: EACH OTHER’S THROATS Trade Paperback.  Imagine Star Trek if scripted by the writers of The X-Files, Fringe, and/or The Twilight Zone. Serio-comic art that fits the grim and goofy blend of this book.  Layman is a writer worth following, everything he’s written since Chew.  FIVE STARS.

#129 - #131  STILETTO #1 Officer Down, #2 Inside Job, #3 No Way Out (Lion Forge, 2019) Stiletto is a Danish crime novella in three parts that is gritty, atmospheric and packs a powerful punch in it’s twisty ending. Set in a nation-neutral city (fill in your favorite country and city), it about dirty cops, a corrupt criminal justice system, and a conflicted insider within police ranks. The art and coloring choices of author/artist Palle Schmidt perfectly compliment the story. FIVE STARS.

#132 - #137  ONCE AND FUTURE #1-6  (Boom! Studios, 2019-2020) Kieron Gillen puts his spin on the beloved UK legend, with the return of King Arthur to modern times maybe not being such a good thing - - although the book is light-hearted and good-natured in spite of the violence. Some of the best characters Gillen has created, especially the bad-ass Grandma with attitude. Only Granny and her nephew can stop the cults from reviving a nasty tyrant. My favorite new comic debut of 2019 and my favorite series of 2020 so far. (Although I don't think that's going to hold up. There are some series I love so far, but only 2 issues to date. Time will tell, once things resume.) FIVE STARS.
