AHOY Reviews First Wave Of Titles In 2018, Part One

Welcome to the April edition of the AHOY newsletter!
Usually this newsletter is all about looking forward at what's coming down the pike—but this month, with the future looking a bit uncertain, we though we'd turn to our rearview mirrors instead and soak up some sweet, sweet nostalgia. It's the AHOY Newsletter: Super Special Secret Origins Edition!
This month, we're taking a look back at the very first round of AHOY comics ever published—also known as Wave 1—way back in the distant year of 2018. Hop in your DeLorean and let's time travel back to those heady days, when Harry and Meghan Markle were still royals, the Olympics were still a thing, and no one had ever heard of a little bug called COVID-19...
(Oh, and as a reminder, the first issues of the Wave 1 comics are available right now for FREE on comiXology, so no excuses if you don't know what we're talking about! And remember, when we're on the other side of this moment, call your local comic shop or bookstore and tell them to add all the AHOY books to your pull list.)

The very first AHOY title ever published was WRONG EARTH, written by Tom Peyer and illustrated by Jamal Igle. (That advice about slow and steady wins the race? Yeah, we ignored that and came out of the gate sprinting. Haven't seen that tortoise since...)
Jamal Igle was gracious enough to share a veritable treasure trove of process art with us, and we picked out some our favorites. Check out these early sketches and never-before-seen looks at early Dragonfly and Dragonflyman's heads, the Stinger of Earth Omega, Number One, and, of course, the inimitable Triviac.

(W) Tom Peyer, Paul Constant, Grant Morrison
(A) Juan Castro, Shannon Wheeler
(A/CA) Jamal Igle
AHOY Comics launches with a biting superhero satire! On one world, Dragonflyman and his sidekick Stinger enjoy a life of adventure. On another Earth, the Dragonfly hunts criminal parasites like a lethal exterminator. But what happens when these two heroes change places? By Tom Peyer (Captain Kid, Hourman) and Jamal Igle (Black, Supergirl)! And, a “Golden Age” Stinger solo story, by Paul Constant and Frank Cammuso! Plus: An all-new text story by comics legend Grant Morrison: “‘Hud’ Hornet’s Holiday In Hell,” illustrated by Rob Steen! All this plus a cartoon by Shannon Wheeler!

We dug through the archives and found the very first news story about AHOY, this piece from THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER.
"A new independent comic book publisher will be launching this fall with a simple question: Shouldn’t you want a little more from your comic books?"
Huh! What a concept. Expect... more?! That's pretty catchy...
And check out this kicker of a quote from Hart: "I’ve come to believe you can speak truth through the fundamental telling of stories, and that’s what AHOY is going to do. I believe we can take the best of literature and the best of comics, put them in a blender and come up with something new, exciting and — most of all — true."
Just one newsletter writer's opinion, but I'm pretty sure we stuck to our word with that one.
