The 1,000 COMICS CHALLENGE, Part Seven

PLUNGE #2 (DC/Hill House) In addition to the resurrected ship, there's strange stuff going on the island: lurking figures, mutated crabs and monstrous sea creatures. 4 Stars.

PUNISHER SOVIET #4 (Marvel) Frank Castle and new partner Vlery Stepanovich continue the attack on Russian mobster Konstantin Pronchenko. They take out a fleet and kidnap his wife. 4 Stars.

PUNISHER SOVIET #5 (Marvel) Next to last issue of this mini-series as Pronchenko's air assault on Castle and Stepanovich finds a mark. 4 Stars.

Re-read BATMAN: EARTH ONE by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank. Johns tweaks a couple things in the Batman origin and the result is a gritty, compelling story. Frank's art is gorgeous. One of the Top Ten Batman stories for sure, a must read. If you don't have a copy, you can order online from Captain Blue Hen. FIVE STARS.

DETECTIVE COMICS #948, part of the DC Universe Rebirth. Batwoman Begins, Part One. I think this should have been titled Batwoman Begins Again. Kate and Bruce face off against Hugo Strange's monsters. The art saved it from a lower rating. THREE STARS.

LOCKE & KEY: WELCOME TO LOVECRAFT Hardcover: A master class in sequential storytelling. Amazing script and plot. Expressive and fluid art. Everyone needs to read this. Episode One of the Netflix show did a commendable job, but nothing compared to the power of the comic. Reprints #1-6. FIVE STARS.

THOR #3 Thor fights Beta Ray Bill, under the observant eye of Galactus. THREE STARS.

THOR #4 Thor fights Sif, briefly. Donny Cates take on Thor is good, but I'm having trouble getting excited about this. Over the decades I've probably read more Thor books than I should have, and may be burned out and jaded. THREE STARS.
