This began as a challenge issued to Captain Blue Hen from some friendly comic shops in Texas and Ohio. Captain Blue Hen Comics didn’t win that challenge, but they came close. Then, they were invited to keep going and participate in the 2,021 COMIC CHALLENGE - - same rules, the winner is the shop/group that reads and posts 2,021 comics first.
I’ll share all my posts to the group on this blog page. I’ve been numbering my entries, picking up where I left off with the 1,000 COMIC CHALLENGE. I’m curious to see how long it takes me to read that many comics. I want the results to be realistic so I’m not going to binge read unless I happen to be in the mood. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t end up reading some comics, so we’ll see how long it takes me.
#196, 197, 198, 199, 200, 201 MONSTRESS VOLUME ONE: AWAKENING (Image) Reprints Monstress #1-6. There is as much depth and detail here as in an epic fantasy trilogy. An awesome blend of Middle Ages castles and royalty with steampunk elements. A teenage war survivor has a monster living inside her. FIVE STARS.
#202 DISASTER INC #1 (Aftershock) If you're rich you can afford an exclusive upscale guided travel service like this. First stop: the restricted area around the Fukushima nuclear meltdown in Japan. FOUR STARS.
#203 DEAD DAY #1 (Aftershock, release date May 27) Here's a fresh spin on the undead/zombie genre. On Dead Day, from sunrise to sunset, the deceased return to "have fun and visit family", and also less friendly reasons. FIVE STARS.
#204 SPAWN KILLS EVERYONE! 2 #1 of 4 (Image, 2018) Baby Spawn binges on junk food, then needs to go to the Doctor (Doom, Ock, Strange, Fate, etc). The cure doesn’t help much and ends up launching mini-Spawns from his butt. Juvenile humor, hopefully intended to get a younger audience. I can’t imagine this going on for 4 issues. Glad I only have the one. ONE AND ONE-HALF STARS.
#205 SPIDER-GWEN: GHOST SPIDER #3 (Marvel 2019) I wanted to like this, as I’m a fan of the fiction of Seanan McGuire. The search for another version of Gwen in yet another ‘verse turns up a surprise. But I don’t care. This just doesn’t work for me, multi-verse and all that goes with it. TWO STARS.
#206 WONDER WOMAN #1 (DC Rebirth, 2016) “The Lies, Part One” Wonder Woman is in the Banakane (Africa) rainforest up against a beast god and a warlord (that Steve is searching for) and runs into Cheetah. Rucka’s story seems formulaic but okay. Liam Sharp’s art is the real star. TWO AND ONE-HALF STARS.
#207 WONDER WOMAN #3 (DC Rebirth, 2016) “The Lies, Part Two” Wonder Woman tries to remind Cheetah who she really is, her friend. But she can’t save her. Sharp’s art kept me in this boring story. Just can’t get interested here. TWO STARS.
#208 X-MEN GOLD #10 (Marvel, 2017) Omega Red is back, badder than ever. The team get a tip from a Russian who claims he is uncle to Colossus and Magik. Will he betray the X-Men? Of course. Ho hum. TWO STARS.
#209, 210, 211, 212 FAITH: HOLLYWOOD AND VINE trade paperback. Reprints Faith #1-4 Valiant limited series 2016. My favorite of the Faith story arcs. A very likable pop culture geeking female in plus size clothing, a little uncertain of her powers, a lot self-conscious, a lot to like. Love the scene where she breaks up the puppy farm. FOUR STARS.
#213, 214, 215, 216, 217 THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, VOLUME 1: THE FAUST ACT. (Image) Wicked good. Can't say too much here. Jason gets nervous if I tell too much before the CBH Book Club meets to discuss this. Gods come back as pop stars. "We only want your adoration". Hey, please don't "klkk" those fingers while I'm talking. FIVE STARS.
