This began as a challenge issued to Captain Blue Hen from some friendly comic shops in Texas and Ohio. Captain Blue Hen Comics didn’t win
that challenge, but they came close. Then, they were invited to keep going and participate in the 2,021 COMIC CHALLENGE - - same rules, the winner is the shop/group that reads and posts 2,021 comics first.
I’ll share all my posts to the group on this blog page. I’ve been
numbering my entries, picking up where I left off with the 1,000 COMIC CHALLENGE. I’m curious to see how long it takes me to read that many comics. I want the results to be realistic so I’m not going to binge read unless I happen to be in the mood. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t end up reading some comics, so we’ll see how long it takes me.
#218, 219, 220, 221, 222 A WALK THROUGH HELL VOLUME 1: THE WAREHOUSE. (Aftershock, 2018) Reprints Issues #1-5. Garth Ennis straddles the line between crime and horror, and dives deep into the psyches of FBI agents. Is the warehouse a gateway to Hell where those who enter have to revisit their guilty past? The complete series is being collected in hardcover. Garth Ennis fans will want it. The final order cutoff is Monday, May 11 - - so let CBH know if you want to pick it up. FOUR STARS.
#223 ROGUE PLANET #1 (Oni Publishing, 5/27 release) : Cullen Bunn always brings the scares, here in a blend of science fiction and horror on a strange planet. Read my review at popculturepodium.blogspot.com for more details. If you want this book, please pre-order at CBH by Monday 5/11 or pray that they ordered some for the shelf if you prefer to gamble. 3.75 STARS OUT OF A POSSIBLE 5.
#224, 225, 226, 227 BONE PARISH VOLUME 1 (Boom) details the escalating business venture of the Winters, a small New Orleans family of mixed race who develop a brand-new street drug that provides a hallucinogenic experience like no other. Ash is derived from the bodies of decomposing corpses and when snorted, allows the user to obtain an illusory out-of-body experience through the deceased's eyes and mind. Of course, organized crime and the Mexican cartel want a piece of the business, and bloodshed ensues. Reprints Issues 1-4. FIVE STARS.
#228, 229, 230, 231 BONE PARISH, VOLUME TWO (Boom): The brutality and gruesomeness of Volume One now seem a bit tame compared to what occurs in Volume Two, the second act of Bone Parish. It's a devilishly clever set-up for what is sure to be a climatic showdown in the final Volume Three. Reprints Bone Parish #5-8.
#232, 233, 234, 235 BONE PARISH, VOLUME 3 (Boom Studios) Reprints Issues #9-12. The big finale. When the illicit family drug business mixes it up with organized crime and the Mexican cartel things get bloody. Retaliation after retaliation. A fitting end to the story, a clever blend of horror and crime with an inventive premise: snort the dead's ashes and relive their memories. I loved this saga. Sorry to see it end, although the final issue does leave an opening for a new story. FIVE STARS.
#236, 237, 238 SWEET TOOTH #2, 3, 4 (DC/Vertigo, 2009-2010) Jeff Lemire on story and art doing what he does best -tell heartwarming stories with simple yet evocative images. The poor 9 year old boy with antlers and animal ears, recently orphaned during a post-plague apocalyptic world takes ups with a drifter who may or not be well-intentioned and gets a few life lessons. FIVE STARS.
#239, 240, 241, 242 ROAD RAGE #1-4 (IDW, 2012) There are two separate stories in this mini-series. Road Rage:Throttle adapts Stephen King's and Joe Hill's collaboration -- biker gang versus a tanker truck. Road Rage: Duel adapts the classic Richard Matheson story that inspired the King/Hill homage. Great adaptations by Chris Ryall with great art. I had previously read both print stories several times, so it was kind of a spoiler for me that killed some of the tension/excitement. FOUR STARS
