This began as a challenge issued to Captain Blue Hen from some friendly comic shops in Texas and Ohio. Captain Blue Hen Comics didn’t win that challenge, but they came close. Then, they were invited to keep going and participate in the 2,021 COMIC CHALLENGE - - same rules, the winner is the shop/group that reads and posts 2,021 comics first.
I’ll share all my posts to the group on this blog page. I’ve been numbering my entries, picking up where I left off with the 1,000 Comics Challenge. I'm curious to see how long it takes me to read that many comics. I want the result to be realistic so I'm not going to binge read unless I happen to be in the mood. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't end up reading some comics, so we'll see how long it takes me.
#170, 171, 172, 173, 174 TALES OF SUSPENSE FEATURING HAWKEYE AND THE WINTER SOLDIER trade paperback (Marvel 2018) Reprints Issues #100-104. As the cover blurb says "The dynamic between Winter Soldier and Hawkeye is excellent" . . AIPTI. Indeed. I love the way that Rosenberg writes Hawkeye. This is a fast-paced action tale with Black Widow involved as well. FOUR STARS.
#175, 176, 177, 178 BLOODSHOT BOOK TWO (Valiant, 2020) With the resources of the Burned behind him, Bloodshot is free to seek his own form of justice. First up: freeing the psiot Eidolon from Black Bar. Bloodshot Issues #4-6 plus Bloodshots Day Off, my favorite single issue story from 2017. FOUR STARS.
#179 BROKEN GARGOYLES #1 (Source Point Press, scheduled July 1 release date) The art is stunning, the world-building amazing. World War I vets in a re-imagined diesel punk 1925 are isolated and neglected, and stage a revolt to draw attention to their needs. I received an advance digital review copy of this from writer Bob Salley. This is definitely one you'll want to pre-order. FIVE STARS.
#180, 181, 182, 183, 184 REPLICA Trade Paperback.(Aftershock 2016) Reprints Issues #1-5. Quirky science-fiction. Mystery. Comedy. And Legal Drama. Amazing art from Andy Clarke that really brings Paul Jenkin's story to life. FIVE STARS.
#185, 186, 187, 188, 189 SUPER SONS #1 - 5 (DC, 2017) Devilish troublemaker Damien Wayne lures sheltered Jon Kent out of his bedroom for late night adventures and fun, until they run into Kid Amazo. I liked the standalone story in Issue #5 the best. THREE & ONE-HALF STARS.
#190, 191, 192, 193, 194, 195 GOODNIGHT PARADISE TPB (TKO Studios, 2018) Reprints Issues #1-6, the complete limited series. Joshua Dysart is such an excellent writer. Here he creates empathy for characters most of us would ignore or avoid if encountered: the drunken homeless vagrants and street youth of Venice Beach, CA. The main character lives on beer, abandoned his family for the streets, yet has a strong impulse to seek justice when a young girl is murdered and thrown in a dumpster. An unusual and engaging crime/detective story. FIVE STARS.
