Gary Scott Beatty's Column: Frankenstein; Spectre; Browning films; Being Human

There are many new subscribers to the Aazurn Fan List. HELLO! Instead of boring you with a list of my accomplishments, I'm just going to say all the new stuff is at StrangeHorror.com.

That includes the link to the Gods of Aazurn webcomic. It's the big, red rectangle that says, WEBCOMIC. Free, with likes and comments appreciated.

Friend of Aazurn Tom Kelly is nearing the end of a Kickstarter for Foot Fist Frankenstein, a 120 page hardcover martial arts story of revenge and cool monster action. You may remember his work from Indie Comics Magazine, I sure do.

I'm just happy to be able to share a pic from Tom because I really, really like his art style.

You can look into Tom's GN here.

Friend of Aazurn Tom Mandrake has cleaned up his website and launched some new (old) pages into the original art section. If you've ever wanted a Mandrake Spectrepage, or just want to drool over his art, now is the time to leap over there.

Is this a new announcement? Tom was nice enough to illustrate the cover for my coming Welcome to Dunwich graphic novel. We're buddies from my con days. I treasure the Mandrake original art I own like Golem worrying over the One Ring.

Looking at Tom's pages answers the frequently asked question, "What does an inker do?" I can get lost in his beautiful line work.

You can look into Tom's stuff here.

Sometimes I'm simply in the mood for eerie, '70s-style, B-movie horror, and throughout the years I keep coming back to S.F. Browning's Don't Look In The Basement.

Is it brilliant? No. Is it insightful? No. Is it character-driven? Sort of, a parody of the mentally ill.

From the grainy film to the low budget lighting, Don't Look In The Basement pushes all the right buttons for me. Some day I'll pull together several Browning films for analysis here. Don't Hang Up (Don't Open the Door) (1974), Keep My Grave Open (The House Where Hell Froze Over) (1977), Scum of the Earth (1974) -- oh, gawd, yes, Scum of the Earth.

I also have a curious little story to share about Don't Look In The Basement.

For now, though, you can see Don't Look In The Basement and The House Where Hell Froze Over free with ads on TubiTV.

There is nothing wrong with the American version of Being Human, but I enjoy the British original way more. If you're a Buffy fan, you'll enjoy the friendships, comedy and cleverness of this show. Two werewolves, a vampire and a ghost living together is all you need to know.

If you want to try it out, this is a good one-off from season 3, free with ads on TubiTV.NOTE: Some spoilers for the continued story. (You can always start off with episode one.)

You're still here, and so am I, so we're proven stronger than those forces trying to beat us down. So far, there are more of us than there are of them. Take care of yourself. You are not alone.

In glorious service to our Aazurn overlords,
Gary Scott Beatty
