Stay-At-Home Theater: THE VOW documentary series on HBO. Disturbing,
well-told documentary of the rise and fall of a multi-level marketing cult that
preyed on rich and influential donors. At it's heart it was a manipulative and
controlling scheme of it's high IQ founder that led to the creation of a sex
slave and branding ritual to serve his schemes. Just recently the founder was
found guilty and sentenced to 120 years in prison.
What was so shocking to watch was how persuasive and cunning the leader
and his acolytes were. His sermons made sense in a weird way until you gave
them more thought. Some never realized the con job being played on them,
and followed the leader blindly despite efforts of former members to free them
and expose this for what it really was.
Watching intelligent people get sucked into this made me understand how
Trump's base supports him no matter what. They also are members of a cult,
sucked in by Trumps lies and conniving and it's just as difficult to make them
think twice, evaluate this for what it is, and reject it. I feel sorry for them.
