Happy Groundhog Day! While many communities across North America will celebrate the seasonally-significant predictive powers of their resident giant rodent (Punxsutawney Phil being the most famous), over in the Big Apple legend has it that if Maniac Harry emerges from the subway station at Times Square and sees his shadow, it’ll be at least six weeks more of random passenger slashing. Wait. That’s not how the legend goes? In describing his new series, MANIAC OF NEW YORK, debuting at comic shops tomorrow, Emmy award-winning writer Elliott Kalan puts it this way, “A slasher movie-style unstoppable killer is marauding through New York City, and since nobody knows how to solve the problem, everyone in power has given up and decides to just live with New Yorkers occasionally being hacked to death by an ax-wielding maniac.” One of the inspirations for the tale, illustrated and colored by Hellblazer’s Andrea Muttiwith letters by Taylor Esposito, was The Daily Show and MST3K writer’s “extreme adolescent disappointment with Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, which promised a citywide metropolitan bloodbath and delivered a couple shots of Jason walking through Times Square in a bad mood.” Cue bloodbath.
