BURIED TREASURES: Unearthing Some Golden Gems From DC

Guest review by The 10,000 Comics Pyramid's DAVE WRIGHTEOUS . . . . .

Add 3 classics from my Captain Blue Hen score this week!

Brave and the Bold #72 (DC, 1967)

This gorgeous Infantino/Anderson cover hooked me like a trout for this Bob Haney ("Continuity? HA! What's that??") tale of the Ghost Pilot, a former WWI pilot back from the dead for vengeance on his old squad with the help of a possessed Flash.

Chuck Cuidera, a DC vet who superbly inked a million Dick Dillin issues of Blackhawk, embellishes Carmine's pencils and the art looked not bad but..off? Still, a solid SA yarn. Grade B+

Boy Commandos #2 (DC, 1973

Two Simon and Kirby gems from 1944 have the lads and Rip ably aided by a contraband cat and smuggling a printing press to an underground resistance in German occupied Belgium.

Everyone knows Kirby's bulky, dynamic Marvel art from the 60's, but dig his Simon inked stuff from 20 years prior..outstanding work. Grade: A

Showcase #63 (DC 1966)

The Inferior Five get their second issue in the spotlight with this wacky romp with Joe Orlando art and a surprisingly good story when most humor books got more groans than grins.

Fun Fact: This issue had that old Ownership Statement andinformed me that the average issue of Showcase (an anthology book, mind you) had a PAID circulation of 235,000!!! Times sure have changed.. Grade: B
