THE EXORCIST III on Shudder streaming service: This does have its' moments
but overall it's confusing, perhaps a little too artistic for its' own good as writer
William Peter Blatty finally gets to direct. This was based on his novel Legion, and
the Morgan Creek producers decided it needed to be called Exorcist III, and then
added an exorcism scene. What made this work for me were 1) an incredible
performance by Brad Douriff as the possessed (Gemini killer/Father Karass, assorted demons).
His maniacal speeches to George C Scott are incredible. 2) Watching this as
part of The Last Drive-In Movie Show with host Joe Bob Briggs, who provides
important commentary and background information throughout the film. Oh yeah,
I forgot that famous jump scare scene in the mental asylum. That one will have
you looking behind you anytime you're alone. The actor portraying the Angel Of Death
was credited as Patrick Ewing. The basketball player? Hmmm, the movie does
take place in Georgetown (D.C.) where he played college ball. Who knows? (Joe Bob
did not mention this, so I think not) THREE STARS.
This is in my top 100 horror films of all time.
