Artist GARY SCOTT BEATTY Shares His Process

Finished Art

More of the Worse than Death series, this delightful little family portrait is called Deceived by Genes.

This will be part of a much larger project I can't talk about yet. Some time before the end of the year I can let some news slip, after I've corralled some of these major artists I've been talking to.

Deceived by Genes

I hope this is as creepy as it appeared in my head. Kind of a back-woods Lovecraft vibe to it.

Back in May when this was completed I was hitting a stride, with inks-to-colors coming fast and furious. I wish I could always keep up that pace, but it comes and goes.

New Book Story

Today's story has a happy ending, but it took a lot of my time to resolve and could have turned out very nasty.

As you know I'm working with other artists toward a big Aazurn anthology coming in 2023. One of those I contacted was excited about the story and ready to dig in. I PayPaled her half the money down to start.

That's when her bad health kicked in. She immediately pulled out of the job like a real pro. Then she tried to send me back the half-down payment.

I went through a month and a half of nail-biting as everyone from PayPal to her bank got in the way of the transfer. Back and forth.

She is out of state and I've never even met her face to face, like the other artists in the anthology. She seemed legit, but how can you really tell?

Turns out she and her boyfriend went through a bunch of crap with financial institutions before I finally received a PayPal refund. They weren't crooks, just caught up in circumstances.

I guess the takeaway is: keep the lines of communication open. I've never had to go to court with any creator and I'm thankful that wasn't the solution here.

Her health, from what I know, is now fine.
