THE EXORCIST’S HOUSE by Nick Roberts (Crystal Lake Publishing, May 2022) Kindle Edition, 288 pages. 2022 Bram Stoker Award Nominee for Best Novel.
Synopsis on the Goodreads website . . . . . .
In the summer of 1994, psychologist Daniel Hill buys a rustic farmhouse nestled in the rolling hills of West Virginia.
Along with his wife, Nora, and their teenage daughter, Alice, the family uproots their lives in Ohio and moves south. At first, they are seduced by the natural beauty of the farm and enjoy the bonding experience of fixing the old house, but that all changes when they discover a hidden room in the basement with a well, boarded shut and adorned with crucifixes.
Local legends about the previous owner’s predilection for performing exorcisms come to light, but by then, all Hell has broken loose.
My Four-Star review on the Goodreads website . . . . .
Nick Robert's version of an exorcism story is a scares-inducing thriller that adds several new elements to the tales of devil/demon possession and the rites of exorcism. One of the many creepy features of the story, and the one that really stuck with me, is that beyond physical devil possession of a human body there is also mental possession. Even worse, the demon can follow its' victims anywhere beyond the house where it originated. Of course, the exorcism must be performed at the source.
There are plenty of jump scares throughout the novel and the pacing will get the pulse racing right away beginning with that nightmarish prologue. The characters are well-developed and deserving of our empathy, concern and anxiety. This one was a real nail-biter. Recommended.
