DAVE WILLIAMS Reviews SUPERMAN: LOST #1

Guest review by Dave Williams . . . . .
SUPERMAN: LOST #1 of 10 by Christopher Priest and Carlo Pagulayan (DC Comics, March 2023) Dave's Rating: 4.5 Stars out of a possible 5 Stars.

Great first issue! Great Superman comic! There are some superhero comics that use the characters as action figures that they crash into each other to push along a high concept plot. Many writers prefer to focus on a new character or the villain gets all the good character bits. So far this story really feels like it could not be about just any character It is a Superman story.
We immediately get a classic Supes save and then straight into Lois and Clark’s home life. (What part of continuity is this series? Is it in regular continuity? Who cares! But the couple live together with no kid and the classic Big 7 Justice League is featured.) The save at the beginning starts a mystery that may be for Lois to solve. Speaking of Lois, has there been an editorial push for her to be super horny for Clark? This is the third recent Supes comic in a row that shows Lois in this light. Not a problem, just an observation. . . . . . Anyway! An emergency sends Clark off and when he returns, he is . . . not right. He says he’s been away for 20 years. Bruce Wayne shows up and we hear about the Justice League encounter with a potentially world-ending threat.
Priest (aka Christopher Priest and James Owlsey) always writes stories that zig and zag on their timelines. This one is no different as we get most of the action in a flashback relayed to Lois. The Justice League part makes me want to see the classic version back and Priest as writer. Each member must serve a purpose according to their unique abilities like any great DC superhero comic.
Batman, and ultimately Superman, decide that the only way to stop the world from being destroyed is for Supes to take action that he may not survive. Clark knows that this is a job for only Superman. Lois, as she is told the tale, hears that Batman encouraged Superman to do it and is upset. Superman tells her: “Bruce didn’t send me. Jor-El sent me. Martha Kent sent me.” Chills! This is Superman!
The art by Carlo Pagulayan (also contributing to plot) and Jason Paz is magnificent. No generic faces here! Some actually blend a little of an actor here or there. Wonder Woman plainly has a touch of Gal Gadot. All superhero uniforms look great. Facial expressions are done really well with lots of detail everywhere. Very clean with some visuals that pop off of the page.
I really cannot wait for the next issue! 4.5 out of 5 Stars.
