Book Review of RESURRECTION WALK by Michael Connelly

RESURRECTION WALK by Michael Connelly (Little, Brown & Company, November 2023) Hardcover, 405 pages ISBN # 9789316563765 / 0316563765

Synopsis on the Goodreads website . . . . .

Defense attorney Mickey Haller is back, taking the long shot cases, where the chances of winning are one in a million. After getting a wrongfully convicted man out of prison, he is inundated with pleas from incarcerated people claiming innocence. He enlists his half brother, retired LAPD Detective Harry Bosch, to weed through the letters, knowing most claims will be false.

Bosch pulls a needle from the haystack: a woman in prison for killing her husband, a sheriff’s deputy, but who still maintains her innocence. Bosch reviews the case and sees elements that don’t add up, and a sheriff’s department intent on bringing quick justice in the killing of one of its own.

Now Haller has an uphill battle in court, a David fighting Goliaths to vindicate his client. The path for both lawyer and investigator is fraught with danger from those who don’t want the case reopened and will stop at nothing to keep the Haller-Bosch dream team from finding the truth.

My Five Star Review on the Goodreads website . . . . .

My first read of 2024 just happens to be a Five-Star Rating. A happy accident, and hoping for more of this to come throughout the year.

Michael Connelly teams up two of his most popular characters, former detective Harry Bosch and Lincoln Lawyer Mickey Haller. Here's hoping this is the new direction for both series, with Harry working as an investigator for Mickey.

The characters are well-defined, and by this point will seem like familiar acquaintances/friends if you've read at least as much Connelly as I have. What I really appreciate about Connelly's fiction is that his repeat characters progress and develop with each new book, and age as well. Bosch is now retired, being treated for cancer, and has lost a step but none of his acumen and street smarts. Haller has progressed from a tentative but chance-taking lawyer to a prominent legal eagle who is in demand to take on cases.

RESURRECTION WALK reads like a police procedural with plenty of investigative details, but with some added excitement as new information is uncovered that changes the course of Haller's defense of his client. The courtroom scenes are packed with drama and are real page-turners.

This was an incredibly satisfying reading experience. Hail, Connelly!
