COSMIC HORROR MONTHLY #54, December 2024 edited by Jolie Toomajan (www.cosmichorrormonthly.com) Paperback, 68 pages. ISBN #9798302430694
Synopsis on the Goodreads website . . . . .
CHM is a monthly magazine dedicated to publishing the best cosmic horror and weird fiction short stories. We publish a new collection every month in print and digital formats.
We’re closing the year with a quieter issue, one about the precise contours of pain and loss. It features fiction by Joe Koch ("Child of Rawfrog"), Rex Burrows ("The Head in the Pantry") and Shelley Lavigne ("Bilious Green Envy, Burning White Fury") & much more!
My Four-Star Review on the Goodreads website . . . . .
The December 2024 issue of COSMIC HORROR MONTHLY (CHM) features eight stories, one of which is a reprint of a 1950 story from the legendary WEIRD TALES magazine. I enjoyed every story in this year-end issue, and there are several tales worthy of a second reading.
"In The Amygdala of the Beholder" by D. Marmara is my favorite of the issue, an amusing tongue-in-cheek (or tentacle) story as well as a touching romance. A lonely woman decides to utilize Cosmic Connections, a dating service that pairs humans with aliens. Prudence meets Sep'lissia an aquatic creature with tentacles and Medusa-like features and they tickle each other's fancy.
My second favorite is the most "cosmic horror" story this month - - "The Conjuring Of Elderly Widows" by J. Malitoris where two elderly women with arcane knowledge attempt to resurrect a recently drowned grand-daughter with uneven results.
"The Head In The Pantry" by Rex Burrows was an odd but engaging tale that is self-descriptive. Odd, in that the main character seems to accept the unexplained presence of a new item on his pantry shelves and makes adjustments to preserve it.
This is my first experience reading CHM and my first issue as a new subscriber. I was completely unaware of this publication until I heard an ad for it while listening to the THIS IS HORROR podcast. I was able to obtain a free shortened digital version of the November issue, and was impressed enough to subscribe to the monthly magazine, print version.
