The Year In Review: Favorite Comics Read In 2024

NOTE: This is not a Best Of 2024 List. I just didn’t read enough comics published in 2024 to give a fair assessment of the stand-out works. Rather, this list reflects upon what I did read in 2024, regardless of the year originally published, and what I rated Five Stars - my highest rating reserved for those books that leave an impression and are always worth multiple readings. For your information, this is a personal list and entirely subjective. My hope is that you may find it useful in making your own choices. Recognition of good comics should always be shared.

I read over 800 comics in 2024 across several genres, my favorites being crime and horror. Of the twelve titles here that I ranked Five Stars (my highest recommendation), half of them were published in 2024.

My favorite reads in the HORROR genre were these six titles:

CREEPSHOW VOLUME TWO, ISSUE #5 anthology by various creators (Image Comics, January 2024)

PRINCIPLES OF NECROMANCY #1-#4 by Jackson Lansing & Collin Kelly with art by Eamon Winkle (Magma Comix, 2024)

UNIVERSAL MONSTERS: DRACULA #1-#4 by James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds (Image Comics, 2024)

HYDE STREEET #1 by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis (Image Comics, 2024)

THE AUTUMNAL #1-#8 by Daniel Kraus and Chris Sheran (Vault Comics, 2020-2021)

SEVEN YEARS IN DARKNESS: YEAR ONE #1-#4 written and illustrated by Joseph Schmalke (Comics Experience CEX, 2023)

My favorite reads in the CRIME genre were four titles, with two of them a mashup of crime/horror/humor:

CHEW, VOLUME ONE: TASTERS CHOICE by John Layman and Rob Guillory (Image Comics, 2010)

CHEW, VOLUME THREE: MAJOR LEAGUE by John Layman and Rob Guillory (Image Comics, 2011)

THE NAMES #1 by Peter Milligan and Leandro Fernandez (DC/Vertigo, 2014)

LITTLE BLACK BOOK #1-#4 by Jeff McComsey and Felipe Cunha (Artists Writers Artisans AWA, 2024)

Of the remainder, just one superhero title and one science fiction title made it onto my list of favorite reads of 2024:

CATWOMAN: LONELY CITY hardcover written and illustrated by Cliff Chiang (DC/Black Label, October 2022)

SILICON BANDITS #1-4 by Jason Starr and Dalibor Talajic (Magma Comix, 2024)
