Book Review: EL DORADO DRIVE by Megan Abbott

EL DORADO DRIVE by Megan Abbott (G.P. Putnam’s Sons, June 24, 2025) Hardcover, 368 pages. ISBN # 9780593084960

Synopsis on the Goodreads website . . . . .

When Harper moves in with her sister Pam, she’s surprised to find Pam doing so well financially after her messy divorce. After all, Pam’s ex-husband wiped their bank accounts, even stole from their kids. But Pam managed to find her way back—thanks to the Wheel.

Twice a month the women of the Wheel meet. New members bring cash to add to a pool and then gift to one lucky member. It’s all about giving back. Lifting each other up—as women should, as they must.

When Harper is invited, with the promise of an end to her financial burdens, the sisters inadvertently unleash a darkness lurking within the group. If they’re not careful it might just get them killed.

My Four-Star Review on the Goodreads website . . . . .

I’ve never been disappointed by a Megan Abbott novel. She is masterful at writing thrillers featuring strong, but also troubled, female characters and puts readers directly into their heads. I appreciate the womans' perspective on sisterhood, family and financial matters. I understand the characters and empathize with their challenges.

The setting is Detroit, following the partial collapse and re-organization of the automotive industry. Three sisters, growing up in a privileged family of wealth, in their adult life have to struggle to retain a semblance of the worry-free life they once enjoyed.

The novel devotes much of the first half to family drama, slice-0f-life - - and it is fascinating. The sisters join a financial investment woman's club (that is nothing more than a clever pyramid scheme) hoping to find a way to solve their money problems. Friendship. Betrayal. Power. Vulnerability. Murder. Several characters seemed obvious suspects, but Abbott never goes for the obvious.

An engaging, thought-provoking book with plenty of juicy drama.
