The Plot Against America: Official Trailer | HBO

Stay-At-Home Theater: THE PLOT AGAINST AMERICA mini-series on HBO.
An alternate history about Fascism in America, where Nazi sympathizer Charles
Lindbergh becomes the 33rd President of the United States, keeps the U.S. out
of World War II and establishes programs that discriminate against Jews.
Frightening and very timely, considering what we've just experienced. This one will
stay with you. Unsettling. An unlikely horror story. FIVE STARS.

Reviews of New POWER RANGERS, STAR WARS by ADAM REED

EDITOR'S NOTE: I'm happy to find a comics fan that is a knowledgeable resource for all things Power Rangers (which I admit to knowing very little about) and to debut some of his reviews here on Pop Culture Podium. Welcome, Adam!

Guest reviews by RUN THE COMICS 5K'S ADAM REED . . . . . .

MIGHTY MORPHIN' #2-3 (Boom! Studios, December 2020 - January 2021)

Seeing bits of Zordon’s backstory is actually more interesting than the main story, in my opinion. I also enjoy seeing him get pissed and ready to take the Omega Rangers’ powers.

Zedd powers up some Putties, making them a threat for the first time ever. One thing I did notice (don’t know if it was shown off in the first issue) is the new design of the Dragon Dagger, which is based on a weird prop error from the second season featuring a curved blade in new American footage (even though they had the original prop in American shots before).

The Green Ranger’s identity still doesn’t intrigue me but seeing Billy have to face repercussions for helping Promethea restore the Dragon Coin keeps me interested as he was my favorite character growing up (and still is). Adam's Rating: Four Stars out of a possible Five Stars.

POWER RANGERS #2-3 (Boom! Studios, December 2020-January 2021)
The Rangers fight space vampires. That’s these two issues in a nutshell.

I wish I could see a reason (outside of money) that this comic exists. I know it’s only been three issues but I’m not invested with the Omegas and whatever they might do with Drakkon.

Maybe if this had been done as a miniseries or a graphic novel so the story wouldn’t get dragged out. I will say the final page of issue 3 does have me curious for the next.

Adam's Rating: Two Stars out of a possible Five Stars.

STAR WARS #8-10 (Marvel, January-March 2021)

Commander Zahra infiltrates the Rebel command ship, attacks Leia and in doing so destroys her hope. I’d believe that if not for the very next issue, Leia is giving a speech in front of the command staff.

Zahra says without hope, it will affect Leia’s choices going forward but it didn’t seem that way to me. She sends a small group to steal an old droid that can use a long dead language to create a new code the Empire can’t crack and it was neat to see Lobot put to use (I only read three books of the original Expanded Universe so I don’t know if he was used there).

After bringing it back online (and the droid using its brain to not divulge its information so they won’t shut him down again), Leia sends a squadron to check in on the other Rebel cells and deliver the new code only to fall into a trap while Lando contemplates a deal with Jabba to sell him the new code.

It’s neat to see the more dubious side of Lando since in ROTJ he’s a full general so to see him actually earn his rank will be cool.

Adam's Rating: Four Stars out of a possible Five Stars.

Bridgerton | Official Trailer | Netflix

Stay-At-Home Theater: BRIDGERTON Season One on Netflix: Great fun.
Denise and I binge-watched this one. English royalty in costume drama
as debutantes vie for the attentions and marriage to various dukes and
princes. Brilliant narration by Julie Andrews. Mystery. Politics. Family
squabbles. Sex and more sex. FOUR STARS.

DOCTOR SLEEP Trailer (2019)

Stay-At-Home Theater: DOCTOR SLEEP on HBO. I came into this without expectations,
and was pleasantly surprised. I have Stephen King's Doctor Sleep novel in my
book case but I haven't had an opportunity to read it. I've got to admit that
watching this film adaptation reminded me so much of King's work that
I felt a was reading the novel. Great direction, great cast, good special
effects, and some truly creepy and disturbing images. Recommended.
FIVE STARS. (Who cares what the critics say?)
