Comics Review: BILLIONAIRE ISLAND #1

BILLIONAIRE ISLAND #1 (Ahoy Comics, March 2020) Writer: Mark Russell.  Artist: Steve Pugh. Colors: Chris Chuckry.  Letters: Rob Steen.

BILLIONAIRE ISLAND is a brilliant satire with some bite to it. A villain worthy of your scorn is super-smug and super-rich Rick Canto, founder of Bel Canto Social Media Products, owner of Aggrocorp Foods and the brainchild behind Freedom Unlimited. What greedy, selfish one-percenters wouldn’t want to escape to a tax-free floating resort in international waters?

It seems there’s a bit of a problem with some of Canto’s business ventures, where he mixes fake humanitarianism with his own muddled ideology. He’s being found out, and some of the people coming for him want to do more than just investigate and expose him. This is a fast-paced set-up issue that holds much promise for what is coming.

RATING SYSTEM

STORY: I loved it. Very funny and topical. A healthy dose of mystery and suspense help round out the issue and make this quite engaging. 3 POINTS.
ART:    Perfectly suited to the story, only serving to enhance and spice the flavor. That spot-on blend of great facial expressions and body language with a little dose of Mad-magazine irreverence that will remind you of the best of Darirck Roberson and Russ Braun. 3 POINTS
COVER: Nice symbolism, but doesn’t really indicate the contents. 1 POINTS
READ AGAIN?  There’s plenty of asides here that you could miss with just one quick read.  1 POINT.
RECOMMEND? Yep. This is one of my favorite books of 2020 so far.  1 POINT
TOTAL RATING: 9 OUT OF A POSSIBLE 10 POINTS. NEAR PERFECT. DON’T MISS.
