Comics Review: SWEET HEART #1

SWEET HEART #1  (Action Lab/Danger Zone, March 2020)  Dillon Gilbertson, story.  Francesco Iaquinta, art. Marco Pagnotta, colors. Saida Temofonte, letters.

Very weird and disturbing, which means I really liked it! A six-year old in nearby Ellicott City, MD has contact with a swampy humanoid creature, which stalks him throughout his life. Things get complicated when more family members get targeted.

Apparently, these creatures have been around for some time - - as the family doctor knows all about them, has good advice and even prescribes a tonic (interesting idea) to keep them at bay.  Also, there are two breeds of  these creatures, but both are deadly. The smaller versions (still quite tall) are quicker and more passive while the larger versions (Bruisers) are hungrier and more vicious.  The more contact they have with their victims, the hungrier they get.

The story follows protagonist Ben throughout various stages of his life, and becomes more threatening and dangerous when the creatures target both his young daughter and her grandmother (Ben's mother).

RATING SYSTEM

STORY: An interesting and strange premise. Good pacing, with some surprises/twists near the end of Issue #1. 2.5 POINTS.
ART:   Every panel has a painted look. I suspect a digital brush, but I'm not judging or taking points away for that. The creatures are quite frightening. 2.5 POINTS
COVER: Effectively garners attention and curiosity 1 POINT.
READ AGAIN?  There is plenty to appreciate here, especially the handling of the mother/son relationship, which creates a reason to care what happens to these characters.  1 POINT.
RECOMMEND? I'm always looking for a new comic in the horror genre that is not derivative.  1 POINT
TOTAL RATING: 8 OUT OF A POSSIBLE 10 POINTS. ABOVE THE PACK, AND RECOMMENDED.
